Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Act as a visible deterrent to criminal activity by maintaining a strong, professional presence on the sales floor, at entrances, and throughout the store property.
- Proactively patrol the interior and exterior of the retail premises to detect and prevent acts of theft, vandalism, and other security-related incidents.
- Monitor Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems and other surveillance equipment to identify suspicious behavior, policy violations, and potential safety hazards.
- Respond swiftly and appropriately to all security alarms, emergency situations (including medical or fire), and calls for assistance in accordance with established procedures.
- Identify, apprehend, and detain individuals suspected of shoplifting, adhering strictly to company policy and local laws regarding citizen's arrest and use of force.
- Prepare and submit detailed, accurate, and timely incident reports on all security-related activities, including theft, accidents, property damage, and policy violations.
- Engage with customers in a friendly and professional manner, providing assistance and information to enhance the overall shopping experience while performing security duties.
- Conduct regular and thorough inspections of store security and safety systems, including fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and alarm panels, to ensure they are functional.
- Enforce company policies and procedures related to asset protection, employee conduct, and operational security to minimize risk and internal losses.
- Collaborate effectively with store management and local law enforcement agencies to report incidents, share information, and support investigations and prosecutions.
- Utilize de-escalation techniques to manage and resolve conflicts involving agitated customers or individuals, maintaining a calm and controlled environment.
- Perform standardized checks as required, such as employee bag checks, vendor verifications, and monitoring of high-value merchandise displays.
- Testify in legal proceedings as a representative of the company when required for cases involving theft or other criminal activities observed on duty.
- Conduct discreet surveillance and investigations to identify and address instances of internal theft, organized retail crime, and fraudulent activity.
- Assist with the secure opening and closing of the store, ensuring all access points are properly secured and alarm systems are armed/disarmed correctly.
Secondary Functions
- Support the loss prevention team by assisting with internal and external investigations, gathering evidence, and documenting findings.
- Train and educate store employees on loss prevention awareness, safety protocols, and how to respond during emergency situations.
- Participate in the planning and execution of periodic safety drills, such as fire evacuation or active shooter response drills.
- Provide a security presence and crowd control during high-traffic periods, special sales events, and product launches.
- Escort employees or management to their vehicles after closing or during bank deposit runs to ensure their personal safety.
- Review past surveillance footage to analyze incidents, identify operational vulnerabilities, or support investigations into reported losses.
- Monitor and control access to non-public areas of the store, ensuring only authorized personnel, vendors, and contractors are granted entry.
- Identify and promptly report any maintenance issues or physical hazards observed during patrols, such as broken fixtures, spills, or lighting outages.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Proficiency in operating modern surveillance systems, including CCTV, digital video recorders (DVRs), and access control panels.
- Possession of a current and valid state-issued Security Guard License or certification as required by local regulations.
- Certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED, with the ability to render immediate aid in a medical emergency.
- Strong knowledge of loss prevention principles, including investigative techniques and proper procedures for apprehending and detaining subjects.
- Competency in technical writing for the creation of clear, concise, and legally defensible incident reports and activity logs.
- A solid understanding of relevant local and state laws pertaining to security operations, such as citizen's arrest, use of force, and search and seizure.
- Ability to use security-related technology, such as two-way radios, body cameras, and incident management software.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range:
- 1-3 years of documented experience in a security, loss prevention, law enforcement, or military role.
