By maintaining accurate stock levels and a well-organized back-of-house, the Stock Associate directly impacts sales, profitability, and the overall customer experience. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Receive, unload, and process incoming freight shipments, meticulously unpacking boxes and verifying the accuracy of merchandise against packing slips and purchase orders.
  • Promptly identify and report any shipping discrepancies, such as damages, shortages, or overages, to the management team and follow established procedures for resolution.
  • Apply security tags, sensors, and price labels to all incoming products according to company standards to prevent loss and ensure pricing accuracy.
  • Manage the flow of merchandise from the stockroom to the sales floor, executing timely replenishment of sold-out items to maintain product availability for customers.
  • Organize and maintain the stockroom in a clean, safe, and efficient manner, ensuring all products are categorized, logically placed, and easily accessible.
  • Execute the transfer of merchandise between stores or back to the distribution center, preparing items for shipment and completing all necessary paperwork.
  • Participate actively in executing markdowns and pricing changes, accurately updating tickets and signage on merchandise both on the sales floor and in the stockroom.
  • Prepare the sales floor for business each day by ensuring it is fully stocked, recovered, and presentable according to visual merchandising standards.
  • Operate and maintain stockroom equipment, such as RF scanners, pallet jacks, and hand trucks, adhering to all safety protocols and procedures.
  • Fulfill and prepare online or buy-online-pickup-in-store (BOPIS) orders, accurately picking products from the stockroom or sales floor and packing them for shipment or customer pickup.
  • Collaborate with the sales team by communicating key information about new product arrivals, low-stock items, and current back-stock levels.
  • Uphold all loss prevention standards and policies, including monitoring the stockroom entrance and being aware of potential theft risks.
  • Support the execution of floor sets and seasonal merchandise changes, assisting with the movement of fixtures and the placement of new product layouts.
  • Breakdown and dispose of cardboard, plastics, and other packaging materials in designated recycling and waste containers to maintain a clean workspace.
  • Perform regular cycle counts and stock checks to ensure inventory accuracy within the store's system and identify potential discrepancies.
  • Proactively consolidate merchandise in the back-stock to maximize space and improve the efficiency of replenishment tasks.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide courteous and efficient support to sales associates and customers on the floor, helping to locate specific sizes, colors, or styles from the stockroom.
  • Assist the visual merchandising team with the setup and takedown of promotional displays, window presentations, and in-store marketing materials.
  • Participate in store-wide physical inventory counts, often conducted outside of regular business hours, to ensure a complete and accurate accounting of all merchandise.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment by communicating effectively with peers and management and offering assistance where needed.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations within the stockroom and the store, promptly reporting any potential hazards to the leadership team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Inventory Management Systems: Proficiency in using handheld RF scanners and familiarity with inventory management or Point of Sale (POS) software to track, receive, and manage stock.
  • Physical Stamina: The ability to consistently lift, carry, and move merchandise and boxes, often weighing up to 50 pounds, and to be on your feet for extended periods.
  • Merchandise Processing: Skill in efficiently unpacking, ticketing, and sensor-tagging a high volume of products according to specific company guidelines.
  • Logistics Coordination: Basic understanding of shipping, receiving, and returns processes, including verifying packing slips and preparing items for transfer.
  • Spatial Organization: Ability to visualize and implement logical systems for organizing stock in a limited space to maximize efficiency and accessibility.

Soft Skills

  • Attention to Detail: Meticulousness in counting, checking, and handling merchandise to ensure accuracy and prevent errors in inventory or pricing.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

Preferred Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years. This is often considered an entry-level position.

Preferred: Previous experience (6+ months) working in a retail stockroom, warehouse, or a similar environment is highly advantageous. Experience in a high-volume setting is a significant plus.
