Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Travel to customer sites, distribution centers, or roadside locations to perform comprehensive diagnostics on a variety of commercial vehicles, including tractors, trailers, and straight trucks.
  • Execute timely and effective emergency roadside repairs on disabled vehicles, focusing on engine, electrical, brake, and air systems to get drivers back on the road safely and swiftly.
  • Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance (PM) services on fleet vehicles at client locations, adhering to strict service schedules and OEM specifications.
    st- Utilize advanced diagnostic software and tools, including laptops and scanners, to accurately troubleshoot fault codes and identify underlying issues in modern electronic engine and vehicle systems.
  • Perform complex repairs on diesel engines, including fuel systems, after-treatment systems (DPF, SCR), and turbochargers, ensuring compliance with all emissions standards.
  • Service and repair vehicle chassis components, including steering, suspension, axles, and driveline systems, to ensure vehicle stability and safety.
  • Address and repair issues within vehicle air brake systems, including compressors, governors, valves, and chambers, performing necessary adjustments and tests.
  • Diagnose and resolve intricate 12/24-volt electrical system problems, from lighting and starting systems to complex wiring harnesses and control modules.
  • Perform service and repair on hydraulic systems, such as those found on liftgates, wet kits, or other specialized vehicle-mounted equipment.
  • Complete tire service, including assessment, repair, and replacement on-site, using appropriate safety cages and mounting/dismounting equipment.
  • Manage and maintain the service truck, ensuring it is well-organized, fully stocked with common parts and tools, and in safe, operational condition at all times.
  • Create detailed and accurate digital work orders for every job, documenting symptoms, diagnostics performed, parts used, and labor time.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with drivers and dispatchers, providing clear explanations of the necessary repairs, estimated timelines, and vehicle status.
  • Adhere to all company and industry safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe-lifting practices.
  • Perform welding and fabrication tasks as needed to complete structural repairs on frames, brackets, or other vehicle components.
  • Manage on-truck parts inventory, tracking usage and ensuring necessary components are reordered to maintain readiness for a wide range of repair scenarios.
  • Provide exceptional customer service, acting as a professional representative of the company and building trust with clients and drivers.
  • Stay current with the latest vehicle technologies, repair techniques, and service bulletins through continuous training and self-guided learning.
  • Respond to after-hours and weekend service calls as part of a rotating on-call schedule to provide 24/7 fleet support.
  • Assess accident damage and provide initial estimates for repair, coordinating with the shop for more extensive body or frame work.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist other technicians in the field or in the shop with complex diagnoses or heavy-duty repairs when required.
  • Participate actively in regular safety meetings, providing feedback and contributing to a culture of continuous safety improvement.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment, both in the mobile service vehicle and at the customer's location.
  • Provide input to the fleet management team regarding recurring vehicle issues and potential improvements to preventative maintenance schedules.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Diesel Engine Diagnostics and Repair: Deep knowledge of modern diesel engines (e.g., Cummins, Detroit, PACCAR, Volvo) and after-treatment systems.
  • Electrical & Electronic Systems: Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing complex vehicle electrical systems, including CAN bus networks.
  • Air Brake Systems: Expertise in troubleshooting, repairing, and certifying vehicle air brake systems (ABS/EBS).
  • Hydraulic Systems: Competency in servicing and repairing hydraulic pumps, cylinders, and control valves.
  • Diagnostic Software Proficiency: Skilled in using OEM or aftermarket diagnostic software (e.g., Cummins INSITE, Bendix ACom, ServiceLink).
  • Welding and Fabrication: Ability to perform MIG and stick welding for component-level repairs.
  • Drivetrain and Chassis: Strong understanding of transmissions, differentials, steering, and suspension systems.
  • DOT/CVSA Regulations: Thorough knowledge of Department of Transportation and Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance inspection criteria.
  • Tire Service: Certified or highly experienced in commercial vehicle tire mounting, dismounting, and repair.
  • HVAC Systems: Ability to diagnose and service truck and trailer heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Diploma or Associate's Degree from a technical college in Diesel or Automotive Technology.
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications, particularly in the T-Series Medium/Heavy Truck set.

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-7 years of hands-on experience as a diesel mechanic in a fleet, dealership, or independent repair shop environment.

Preferred:

  • At least 2 years of direct experience working as a mobile or field mechanic.
  • Experience with a diverse range of Class 7-8 truck and trailer manufacturers.
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is highly advantageous.
