Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely and skillfully operate a heavy-duty commercial roll-off truck along designated routes to collect and transport various materials, including construction debris, scrap metal, and general waste.
- Expertly maneuver the truck and position containers in tight and often congested environments, such as construction sites, industrial facilities, and residential driveways.
- Perform comprehensive daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, meticulously documenting any issues on a Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR).
- Manage the complete lifecycle of a service order, from receiving dispatch instructions to delivering the empty container, swapping it for a full one, and hauling the contents to a designated landfill, transfer station, or recycling facility.
- Operate the hydraulic controls and cable/hook lift systems of the roll-off truck with precision and care to safely load and unload heavy containers.
- Interact professionally and courteously with on-site customers, contractors, and site supervisors, ensuring their needs are met and providing exceptional service.
- Maintain constant communication with the dispatch team to report progress, delays, and any on-site issues or changes to the service order.
- Ensure all transported loads are properly and securely tarped to prevent debris from escaping the container during transit, complying with all state and local laws.
- Navigate routes effectively using maps, GPS, and dispatch guidance to ensure on-time service delivery and maximize daily efficiency.
- Complete all required paperwork, logs, and digital documentation accurately and promptly, including electronic work orders, scale tickets, and Hours of Service (HOS) logs.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, OSHA guidelines, and DOT regulations to foster a culture of safety for yourself and those around you.
- Assess and identify potential hazards at customer sites, making sound judgments on the safe placement of containers to avoid property damage or injury.
- Conduct routine minor maintenance on the truck, such as checking and maintaining fluid levels, inspecting tires, and ensuring all lights and safety equipment are fully functional.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the truck cab and exterior, presenting a professional image of the company at all times.
- Report any necessary vehicle repairs or maintenance needs to the fleet maintenance department immediately to minimize downtime.
- Accurately weigh in and out at disposal facilities and ensure that all weight tickets are correctly documented and submitted.
- Properly handle and document different types of waste materials, following specific protocols for different classifications of debris.
- Proactively identify opportunities for improving route efficiency or service quality and communicate these suggestions to management.
- Provide clear and concise instructions or guidance to spotters or ground personnel when maneuvering in challenging spaces.
- Respond to and resolve customer complaints or issues on-site in a professional manner, escalating to a supervisor when necessary.
- Participate actively in mandatory safety meetings, training sessions, and driver development programs to stay current with best practices and regulations.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with general yard duties, such as organizing containers and cleaning the yard area, during periods of low-volume activity.
- Provide constructive feedback to the dispatch and management teams regarding route logistics, customer feedback, and potential service enhancements.
- Act as a mentor or peer trainer for new drivers, sharing knowledge on vehicle operation, safety procedures, and company policies.
- Support other drivers by assisting with difficult container placements or providing guidance on unfamiliar routes or facilities.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL): A current, valid CDL Class A or B is non-negotiable.
- Hydraulic System Operation: Proficiency in operating the levers and controls for hoist, hook, and cable systems to lift and place containers.
- DOT Regulations Knowledge: A thorough understanding of and adherence to all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and DOT rules.
