Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Safely and proficiently operate various types of rollers (e.g., smooth drum, pneumatic, padfoot) to compact earth, subgrade, aggregate, and asphalt surfaces to specified densities.
Execute precise and overlapping rolling patterns to ensure uniform compaction and achieve a smooth, high-quality finish free of blemishes or imperfections.
Meticulously monitor the temperature of fresh asphalt to determine the optimal time for breakdown, intermediate, and finish rolling, coordinating closely with the paver operator.
Control and adjust the roller's speed, vibration frequency, and amplitude based on the material type, layer thickness, and ambient weather conditions.
Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the equipment, meticulously checking fluid levels, tire pressure, lights, brakes, and hydraulic systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.
Maintain the roller's water spray system to prevent hot mix asphalt from sticking to the drums, ensuring a clean and consistent mat finish.
Effectively communicate with foremen, grade checkers, and other crew members using established hand signals and two-way radios to coordinate movements and ensure project specifications are met.
Read and interpret grade stakes, site plans, and digital survey markings to ensure compaction is performed in the correct locations and to the required elevations.
Operate the equipment with a high degree of spatial awareness, maintaining safe distances from ground personnel, other machinery, and existing structures.
Adhere strictly to all company, state, and federal safety regulations (including OSHA standards) to foster and maintain a hazard-free work environment.
Document and maintain accurate daily equipment logs, recording hours of operation, maintenance performed, fuel consumption, and any mechanical issues.
Skillfully maneuver heavy machinery in tight quarters, on inclines, around complex curves, and near obstacles with precision and control.
Identify and immediately report any potential hazards, equipment malfunctions, or unsafe conditions to the site supervisor.
Understand the different properties of various soil types, aggregates, and asphalt mixes to apply the most effective and appropriate compaction techniques.
Carefully control machine vibrations to prevent damage to nearby underground utilities, buildings, or other sensitive structures.
Work extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as dictated by project schedules, deadlines, and weather-sensitive operations.
Skillfully "pinch" or seal longitudinal joints and edges to create a seamless, durable transition between paving lanes, preventing future water intrusion and degradation.
Participate actively in daily safety meetings and job hazard analyses (JHAs) to discuss the day's tasks, potential risks, and mitigation strategies.
Keep the operator's cab and the exterior of the machine clean and free of debris to ensure clear visibility, professional appearance, and proper function.
Monitor all machine gauges, dials, and onboard computer systems to ensure the equipment is operating within normal parameters and to preemptively identify potential issues.
Assist in safely guiding dump trucks during material delivery to the paver or stockpile area to maintain a consistent and efficient workflow.
Demonstrate proficiency in both static and vibratory compaction methods, applying the correct technique for each lift and material type.

Secondary Functions

Provide support to the ground crew with manual labor tasks such as raking, shoveling, or sweeping when not actively operating the roller.
Assist with general site cleanup, material organization, and maintaining clear access routes to promote a safe and efficient work environment.
Operate other pieces of small equipment, such as plate compactors or light towers, as needed and if qualified.
Act as a spotter or signal person for other heavy equipment operators in congested or blind-spot areas to ensure safe movement.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Proven experience in operating single-drum, double-drum, and pneumatic tire rollers in a construction environment.
In-depth knowledge of asphalt and soil compaction principles, including rolling patterns, temperature effects, and density testing requirements.
Ability to perform routine preventative maintenance on heavy equipment, including greasing fittings, checking fluids, and cleaning filters.
Competency in reading and interpreting construction blueprints, grade stakes, and layout markings.
Strong understanding of OSHA regulations and safe operating procedures for heavy machinery and construction sites.
Skill in operating equipment in various adverse weather conditions and on challenging terrains, including steep slopes and confined spaces.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5+ years of documented experience serving as a Roller Operator on civil, commercial, or highway asphalt paving projects.

Preferred: Demonstrable experience on large-scale DOT highway projects. Experience with Intelligent Compaction (IC) technology and GPS-equipped machinery is highly desirable.
