Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Directly supervise, train, and mentor a team of route drivers, providing daily guidance, coaching, and constructive feedback to ensure high performance and professional growth.
- Plan, schedule, and dispatch drivers and vehicles for daily routes, ensuring optimal resource allocation and coverage for all assigned territories.
- Monitor driver performance and route progress in real-time using GPS tracking and telematics software, proactively addressing delays or deviations from the plan.
- Uphold and enforce all safety protocols, company policies, and government regulations, including DOT, OSHA, and Hours of Service (HOS) rules.
- Conduct regular safety meetings, training sessions, and "ride-alongs" to observe driver behavior, reinforce safe practices, and identify areas for improvement.
- Serve as the first point of contact for resolving customer service issues, complaints, or special requests related to route service, ensuring timely and professional resolution.
- Lead the investigation and reporting of all accidents, injuries, and property damage incidents, completing required documentation and implementing corrective actions.
- Manage and approve driver timecards, verify payroll accuracy, and oversee scheduling for time off and vacations to maintain operational continuity.
- Analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time service, productivity, cost-per-route, and safety metrics to identify trends and drive continuous improvement.
- Coordinate with the vehicle maintenance department to schedule preventative maintenance, repairs, and daily pre-trip/post-trip vehicle inspections (DVIRs).
- Facilitate daily team huddles to communicate operational goals, safety reminders, and any changes to routes or procedures.
- Participate in the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding process for new route drivers.
- Manage driver performance through formal evaluations, goal setting, and, when necessary, administering disciplinary action in accordance with company policy.
- Optimize routes for maximum efficiency, seeking opportunities to reduce fuel consumption, mileage, and overtime while maintaining service quality.
- Handle on-road emergencies, breakdowns, or service disruptions by coordinating with drivers and internal teams to implement contingency plans.
- Ensure drivers are equipped with the necessary tools, technology (e.g., handheld devices), and personal protective equipment (PPE) to perform their jobs effectively.
- Build and maintain a positive, team-oriented work environment that promotes open communication, respect, and a strong sense of ownership.
- Prepare and distribute daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports to senior management, highlighting performance and key operational insights.
- Act as a liaison between drivers and other departments, including customer service, sales, and maintenance, to ensure seamless communication and workflow.
- Conduct field audits and site visits to ensure service quality, assess container placement, and address any site-specific challenges.
