Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Plan, assemble, alter and dismantle temporary scaffold systems, independent towers, birdcages, cantilever scaffolds, loading bays and edge protection, following method statements, engineering drawings and industry codes of practice to ensure safe access for trades and maintenance teams.
Carry out pre-start site risk assessments and dynamic site surveys to identify hazards, determine scaffold design requirements (loads, tie positions, foundations) and record control measures to mitigate working-at-height risks.
Select, inspect and maintain scaffold components (standards, ledgers, transoms, couplers, toeboards, boards and ties) ensuring all parts are fit-for-purpose, tagged where required and replaced or removed if damaged.
Complete daily and pre-use scaffold inspections, document findings on scaffold inspection reports, and take immediate remedial action for any defects to maintain compliance with regulatory standards and client requirements.
Erect and dismantle tube and fitting and system scaffold safely, using correct rigging, bracing and hand tools, ensuring structural stability, plumbness and safe access routes for site operatives.
Install and maintain fall arrest and fall restraint systems, guardrails, handrails, toe boards and edge protection systems in accordance with fall protection plans and manufacturer instructions.
Read and interpret scaffold drawings, structural details and site layouts, and collaborate with site engineers and project managers to integrate scaffold solutions with ongoing construction activities.
Calculate simple loadings and working loads for scaffold platforms, scaffold ties and loading bays; consult scaffold supervisor or engineer for complex lifting or heavy load scenarios.
Operate lifting equipment and slings to safely handle scaffold materials, coordinate with banksmen and follow exclusion zones when using mechanical hoists or cranes to position scaffold components.
Ensure scaffold bases and foundations are prepared (e.g., sole boards, adjustable base jacks, base plates) and that ground-bearing checks are completed to prevent settlement or instability.
Supervise and mentor apprentices and junior scaffolders on-site, providing on-the-job coaching for safe work practices, equipment handling and compliance with inspection routines.
Maintain cleanliness and organisation of scaffold storage areas and site tool stores; manage return, tagging and inventory of scaffold equipment after use to preserve asset condition and traceability.
Liaise with clients, site supervisors and other trades to coordinate scaffold access windows, phased scaffold removal or resequencing, and provide technical advice on temporary access feasibility and program impact.
Follow and contribute to site-specific method statements and safe systems of work, produce toolbox talk content on scaffold safety and participate in daily site briefings and safety meetings.
Respond to emergency situations involving scaffold failure or unsafe conditions, isolate affected areas and support incident reporting, root-cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
Implement environmental and housekeeping controls while erecting and dismantling scaffold (dust control, waste segregation, noise minimisation) to meet site environmental plans and local regulations.
Fit and use personal protective equipment (PPE) including harnesses, lanyards, helmets, hi-vis clothing and gloves; conduct and document tethering checks when working at height.
Carry out temporary edge protection and roof access works, including ladder positions and safe access points, and ensure routing for materials and personnel are clearly signed and free of obstructions.
Coordinate scaffold handover and sign-off procedures with site management, produce scaffold completion certificates and maintain full documentation for client and compliance audits.
Operate and maintain access equipment such as mobile scaffolds, tower systems, and basic mechanical aids (e.g., scaffold hoists), ensuring all operators are trained and authorized for specific plant use.
Work to production and quality targets while maintaining safety and compliance, flagging any programme risks or resourcing issues to the supervisor and proposing remedial plans to avoid delays.

Secondary Functions

Support site coordination by planning material deliveries, tracking scaffold component usage and advising procurement on critical spares or replacements to prevent work stoppage.
Deliver and record toolbox talks, on-the-job coaching and inductions for new operatives to ensure consistent safety culture and regulatory compliance across crews.
Contribute to the development and continual improvement of scaffold method statements, risk assessments, and inspection checklists based on site learnings and incident reviews.
Assist in training and competency assessments for CISRS/PASMA or local certification schemes, maintaining accurate training records for team members.
Support pre-construction coordination by providing access feasibility reports and preliminary scaffold design sketches to project managers and estimators.
Carry out basic maintenance and minor repairs on scaffolding tools and equipment; escalate major maintenance concerns and ensure tagging/lockout procedures are followed for damaged gear.
Participate in maintenance shutdowns and planned outage works where specialist temporary access solutions are required, working in confined spaces and hazardous environments with appropriate permits.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

CISRS Scaffolder card or equivalent national scaffolding certification; PASMA Tower Training and Mobile scaffold competence where applicable.
Proven experience in tube & fitting and system scaffold erection, alteration and dismantling across commercial, industrial and residential projects.
Strong knowledge of working-at-height regulations, fall-arrest/rescue procedures, and PPE use; familiarity with OSHA, HSE, or relevant local regulatory frameworks.
Competency in reading and interpreting scaffold and structural drawings, method statements, and risk assessments.
Practical understanding of load calculations, tie design and scaffold stability principles; ability to identify when to consult a scaffold engineer.
Rigging and slinging basic skills for safe handling of scaffolding materials; experience working alongside crane operations and following banksman instructions.

Experience operating and maintaining MEWPs, mobile towers and scaffold hoists (training/certification preferred: IPAF/MEWP).

First Aid at Work certification and knowledge of emergency response for height-related incidents (preferred).

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
