Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate and maintain automatic and manual screen printing presses (e.g., M&R, ROQ) to produce high-quality prints on various garments and substrates.
- Execute precise setup and registration for multi-color print jobs, ensuring perfect alignment and color separation for complex designs.
- Accurately mix plastisol, water-based, and discharge inks to match specific Pantone Matching System (PMS) color codes provided in work orders.
- Interpret and follow detailed work orders, verifying garment types, quantities, print locations, and ink colors before starting a production run.
- Conduct thorough quality control checks throughout the printing process, inspecting for print clarity, color accuracy, placement, and registration to minimize misprints.
- Manage the screen preparation process, including coating screens with emulsion, exposing artwork, and washing out stencils with precision.
- Efficiently reclaim and clean used screens, removing ink and emulsion to prepare them for reuse in future projects.
- Troubleshoot and resolve common printing issues on the fly, such as ink viscosity problems, screen tension, off-contact adjustments, and press mechanics.
- Adjust press settings, including squeegee pressure, angle, flood bar, and print speed, to optimize print quality for different fabrics and designs.
- Monitor and adjust curing temperatures and belt speed on conveyor dryers to ensure inks are fully cured for maximum durability and wash-fastness.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on printing presses, dryers, and other shop equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work station, following all safety protocols and proper handling procedures for chemicals and equipment.
- Manage inventory of inks, emulsions, chemicals, and other printing supplies, communicating needs to the shop manager to avoid production delays.
- Perform test prints at the beginning of each run for internal review and client approval, making necessary adjustments before full production.
- Document production output, including quantities, spoilage counts, and job completion times, for accurate record-keeping and workflow analysis.
- Fold, count, and box finished orders, ensuring the final product is neatly packaged and ready for shipping or customer pickup.
- Collaborate with the art department to provide feedback on artwork files, suggesting adjustments to improve printability and final output quality.
- Stay current with new screen printing techniques, ink technologies, and industry best practices to contribute to continuous improvement.
- Assist in training new team members or production assistants on basic printing procedures and safety standards.
- Prepare and burn screens using a direct-to-screen (DTS) or film-based exposure unit, ensuring high-resolution stencils for detailed artwork.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in tracking and documenting production metrics, such as spoilage rates and ink consumption, to support process improvement initiatives.
- Provide hands-on feedback and suggestions for improving production workflows, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality control checklists.
- Work closely with the pre-press and art departments to review and troubleshoot artwork, ensuring designs are optimized for screen printing production.
- Actively participate in daily production meetings to review work orders, prioritize jobs, and coordinate with the team to meet tight deadlines.
