Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Deliver engaging, energetic, and inquiry-based educational programs to diverse audiences, including school groups, families, and adult learners, ensuring content is age-appropriate and aligned with learning objectives.
  • Facilitate hands-on activities, interactive demonstrations, and interpretive experiences within exhibit halls, classrooms, or outdoor spaces, fostering a positive and safe learning environment.
  • Lead captivating and informative guided tours of facilities or grounds, sharing key messages, stories, and information in an accessible and entertaining manner.
  • Manage group dynamics and classroom behavior effectively, using positive reinforcement and established techniques to ensure a productive and inclusive atmosphere for all participants.
  • Adapt program content and delivery style on-the-fly to meet the specific needs, interests, and learning abilities of various groups and individuals.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable and approachable ambassador for the institution, confidently answering a wide range of visitor questions about exhibits, collections, and the organization's mission.
  • Handle and present educational materials, artifacts, or live animals (if applicable) in a safe, ethical, and professional manner, following all institutional protocols and safety guidelines.
  • Foster a sense of curiosity, wonder, and respect for the subject matter (e.g., science, nature, history, art) among all program participants.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with teachers, chaperones, and group leaders before, during, and after their visit to ensure a smooth, organized, and high-quality experience.
  • Uphold the highest standards of customer service, proactively addressing visitor needs and concerns to ensure a positive and memorable visit.
  • Participate actively in required training sessions covering content knowledge, safety procedures, teaching methodologies, and customer service standards.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with the daily setup, breakdown, and cleaning of all classroom spaces, demonstration areas, and program-related equipment to ensure readiness for programming.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain educational kits, supplies, and props, tracking inventory and reporting any needs for replenishment or repair to supervising staff.
  • Support the collection of program data, such as attendance records, and assist in administering participant feedback surveys and evaluations to aid in departmental reporting.
  • Provide operational support for large-scale public events, festivals, overnight programs, and community outreach initiatives as assigned by the education department.
  • Collaborate with the education team and other staff to brainstorm and contribute ideas for the development and refinement of new and existing program curricula.
  • Monitor exhibit spaces and public areas to ensure they are tidy, safe, and functioning correctly, reporting any maintenance or safety issues to the appropriate personnel.
  • Adhere to and enforce all organizational policies and procedures, particularly those related to safety, security, and emergency response.
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and professional team environment by communicating effectively and supporting colleagues within the department and across the organization.
  • Represent the organization professionally at all times through appearance, conduct, and communication when interacting with the public, partners, and colleagues.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Many roles require current enrollment in, or recent completion of, college coursework.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Education or Child Development
  • Biology, Environmental Science, or a related science
  • History, Museum Studies, or Anthropology
  • Theater, Communications, or Performing Arts

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 6 months to 2 years of experience working with children or the general public in a leadership or instructional capacity.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in a formal or informal learning environment such as a camp, museum, school, nature center, zoo, or after-school program is highly desirable. Experience in a public-facing customer service role is also valued.
