Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Proactively engage with a diverse customer base to build rapport and create a welcoming, inclusive shopping environment.
  • Conduct detailed customer consultations to accurately assess their needs, skill level, and budget for specific seasonal events or activities.
  • Provide expert recommendations and demonstrate the features and benefits of a wide range of apparel, equipment, and accessories.
  • Drive sales by leveraging deep product knowledge to offer complete outfitting solutions, including up-selling and cross-selling relevant items.
  • Guide customers through the entire sales process, from initial greeting to final transaction, ensuring a seamless and positive experience.
  • Share authentic, personal stories and experiences related to the products and activities to build credibility and inspire customers.
  • Assist with specialized services such as equipment fittings (e.g., ski boots, backpacks) to ensure proper fit, comfort, and safety.
  • Stay current on all product lines, new technologies, and seasonal trends to serve as a reliable source of information for both customers and team members.
  • Process customer transactions accurately and efficiently using the Point of Sale (POS) system, including sales, returns, and exchanges.
  • Actively promote store events, clinics, and loyalty programs to enhance customer engagement and build a loyal community.
  • Address and resolve customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints with professionalism and empathy, escalating issues when necessary.
  • Meet and exceed individual sales goals and other key performance indicators (KPIs) set by the management team.
  • Maintain a high level of awareness on the sales floor to prevent loss and ensure a safe shopping environment for everyone.
  • Assist customers with placing special orders for items not currently in stock, ensuring follow-through and communication.

Secondary Functions

  • Contribute to the execution of merchandising directives, including setting up displays, organizing product, and ensuring the sales floor is visually appealing.
  • Participate in regular inventory management tasks such as receiving shipments, stocking shelves, and conducting cycle counts.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization throughout the store, including the sales floor, stockroom, and fitting rooms.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and management to achieve store-wide objectives and foster a positive, team-oriented culture.
  • Participate in staff training sessions and product clinics to continuously develop skills and product expertise.
  • Assist in the setup and teardown of in-store promotional events, workshops, and seasonal displays.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in operating Point of Sale (POS) systems and handling cash/credit transactions.
  • Technical knowledge of specific gear related to the season (e.g., ski/snowboard tech, camping equipment, technical apparel).
  • Experience with inventory management software and processes.
  • Visual merchandising and product presentation skills.
  • Basic computer literacy for communication and accessing product information.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Some college coursework or a certificate in a related field.

  • Kinesiology

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years in a customer-facing role.

Preferred: At least 1 year of experience in a retail, sales, or customer service environment, especially within the outdoor, sporting goods, or specialty apparel industry. Personal experience and passion for the relevant seasonal activities are highly valued.
