The Seasonal Tread Assistant is a hands-on, foundational role within our automotive service team, especially critical during our high-volume seasons (typically fall and spring tire changeovers). This position is the backbone of our tire service operations, responsible for the safe and efficient removal, installation, and maintenance of customer tires and wheels. More than just a technician, a Tread Assistant is a guardian of road safety, ensuring every vehicle they service leaves the bay with properly handled, mounted, and balanced tires. This role requires a strong work ethic, a commitment to safety, and a desire to learn the fundamentals of automotive service in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the safe and efficient removal and reinstallation of tire and wheel assemblies from a wide variety of passenger and light truck vehicles.
  • Perform the precise mounting and dismounting of tires onto wheels using state-of-the-art tire changing machines, ensuring no damage occurs to the rim or tire bead.
  • Operate computerized wheel balancing equipment to accurately diagnose and correct any imbalances, applying correct wheel weights to ensure a smooth, vibration-free ride for the customer.
  • Conduct thorough tire rotations according to manufacturer specifications to promote even tread wear and extend the life of the tires.
  • Perform professional flat tire repairs according to industry standards, including patching and plugging from the inside of the tire.
  • Conduct detailed inspections of tires for irregular wear patterns, cuts, punctures, and other signs of damage or aging, and communicate findings to the senior technician or service advisor.
  • Accurately diagnose tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) issues and perform relearn procedures or sensor replacements as required after service.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the service bay, including sweeping floors, wiping down equipment, and properly storing tools.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols and procedures, including the mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like safety glasses and steel-toed boots.
  • Handle customer vehicles with extreme care, using protective floor mats and seat covers, and driving them cautiously in and out of service bays.
  • Assist in managing tire inventory, including unloading new tire deliveries, stocking tires in designated racks, and organizing the storage area.
  • Properly document all services performed on the work order, ensuring accuracy for both the customer and for internal records.
  • Utilize hand and power tools, such as impact wrenches, torque wrenches, and air compressors, responsibly and effectively.
  • Lift and move tires and wheels, which can weigh up to 75 pounds, consistently throughout the workday.
  • Ensure all wheels are torqued to the specific vehicle's manufacturer specifications using a calibrated torque wrench before the vehicle is returned to the customer.
  • Prepare and clean wheel mounting surfaces to ensure a secure and flush fit, preventing potential wheel-off situations.
  • Communicate effectively with service advisors and fellow technicians to ensure a smooth workflow and timely completion of customer jobs.
  • Participate actively in daily team meetings and ongoing training sessions to stay updated on new techniques, products, and safety measures.
  • Manage the proper disposal and recycling of used tires, wheel weights, and other waste materials according to environmental regulations.
  • Perform final quality control checks on all serviced vehicles to confirm work is completed to the highest standard and the vehicle is clean.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist senior technicians with basic vehicle maintenance tasks, such as fluid checks or wiper blade replacements, during periods of high demand.
  • Contribute to the upkeep and minor maintenance of shop equipment, reporting any malfunctions or needs for repair to management.
  • Support service advisors by helping to locate customer vehicles on the lot or preparing them for service.
  • Participate in keeping customer-facing areas of the shop clean and presentable.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Tire Mounting & Dismounting: Proven ability to operate modern tire changing equipment for various wheel sizes and types, including low-profile and run-flat tires.
  • Wheel Balancing: Proficiency in using computerized spin balancers to identify and correct static and dynamic imbalances.
  • TPMS Service: Foundational knowledge of Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, including the ability to perform reset/relearn procedures.
  • Tool Proficiency: Competent and safe use of pneumatic impact wrenches, calibrated torque wrenches, and various hand tools.
  • Safety Compliance: Deep understanding and consistent application of shop safety rules, lifting techniques, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage.
  • Basic Vehicle Knowledge: Familiarity with automotive basics, including lifting points on different vehicle frames and understanding lug nut patterns.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate from a vocational or technical program in Automotive Technology.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Automotive Service Technology
  • Mechanics

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years of experience in a related hands-on role.

Preferred: 6+ months of direct experience in a tire shop, auto dealership, or quick-lube facility. A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is often required.
