- Configure network settings for security devices (static IPs, DHCP reservations, VLAN tagging, subnetting, port forwarding and PoE configuration) and validate connectivity between cameras, controllers and central management systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair hardware and software issues in the field, using diagnostic tools (multimeter, network tester, cable certifier, Wi-Fi analyzer) and manufacturer technical documentation to restore full system functionality.
- Collaborate with project managers, general contractors and electricians to sequence work, ensure site safety and coordinate power and conduit needs for security equipment installations.
- Perform acceptance testing and commissioning procedures, create punch lists, obtain sign-offs from customers and produce as-built documentation and system drawings reflecting final installations.
- Maintain accurate service reports, timesheets and inventory records using company mobile apps or field service management software; escalate complex issues to engineering or vendor support as needed.
- Mount and align cameras, program presets and patrols for PTZs, adjust camera settings (exposure, WDR, compression, frame rate) for optimal image quality in varied lighting conditions and set retention policies on recorders.
- Upgrade firmware and software on security devices and servers as part of patch management and system hardening practices, ensuring compatibility, security and uptime.
- Ensure installations comply with local electrical, building and fire codes (including NFPA 72 where applicable), UL standards and manufacturer installation guidelines to maintain safety and warranty compliance.
- Provide on-site training and walkthroughs for end users, administrators and facilities staff covering system operation, daily maintenance, alarm acknowledgement and video retrieval.
- Respond to service calls and after-hours emergency requests (on-call rotation), prioritizing critical security outages and coordinating timely field responses to minimize risk to clients.
- Inspect and verify door hardware, power supplies, battery backups and UPS systems, performing preventive maintenance tasks to maximize reliability and minimize downtime.
- Assist with material staging, inventory management and ordering of parts and components for scheduled installs; verify delivery accuracy and maintain tidy, secure storage of customer equipment.
- Use ladders, lifts and hand/power tools safely to install equipment at heights, in ceilings and on rooftops; follow fall protection and OSHA safety protocols at all times.
- Prepare estimates or assist sales/PM teams by providing field-based input on labor hours, material needs and site constraints for proposals or scope changes.
- Perform system integrations between security subsystems (video, access control, alarms, intercoms) and third-party platforms (building management systems, emergency notification) to deliver unified solutions.
- Maintain strong vendor relationships and stay current on new products, manufacturer best practices and troubleshooting procedures through training and certification programs.
Secondary Functions
- Provide feedback to operations and engineering teams on recurring field issues and suggest improvements to installation standards and documentation.
- Participate in periodic inventory audits, tool maintenance and company vehicle inspections to ensure field readiness and compliance with company policies.
- Support quality control inspections and internal peer reviews for complex installations to ensure consistency with company standards.
- Assist with site surveys and scope validation for new projects, including environmental assessments, power availability checks and proposed equipment placement sketches.
- Document lessons learned from installations and service calls to improve training content and field troubleshooting guides.
- Maintain and expand professional certifications (OSHA, NICET, vendor-specific certifications) and share best practices with junior technicians through on-the-job mentoring.
- Support warranty claim processing by documenting failure modes, producing photos and coordinating returns with vendors and procurement.
- Coordinate scheduling and communications with customers regarding site access, downtime windows and maintenance windows to minimize business disruption.
- Help maintain a knowledge base of network configurations, VLAN mappings and IP address schemes used across multi-site customer deployments.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize field procedures, reduce truck roll times and improve first-time fix rates.
