Primary Functions

A Security Systems Technician is entrusted with a wide array of critical duties that form the backbone of physical security operations. These responsibilities include:

  • Execute the end-to-end installation of complex, integrated security systems, encompassing the mounting and positioning of CCTV cameras, access control card readers, door hardware, motion detectors, and alarm panels according to precise blueprints and design specifications.
  • Skillfully run, terminate, and test low-voltage cabling, including Cat5/6, coaxial, and multi-conductor cables, ensuring all wiring is neat, secured, and compliant with NEC standards and local building codes.
  • Program and configure security system components, such as DVR/NVRs, access control panels, and IP cameras, to meet specific operational requirements and network configurations.
  • Conduct thorough system commissioning and functional testing to verify that newly installed or repaired systems are operating at peak performance and meet all project requirements before handover.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and routine inspections on existing security systems, proactively identifying potential issues, cleaning components, and making adjustments to prevent system downtime.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical issues and system malfunctions in a timely and efficient manner, utilizing diagnostic tools, multimeters, and a systematic approach to problem-solving.
  • Provide clear and comprehensive training to end-users and clients, demonstrating how to operate their security systems effectively and empowering them to manage day-to-day functions.
  • Read and interpret a variety of technical documents, including floor plans, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer installation manuals, to guide installation and service work.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate documentation for all service calls, installations, and maintenance visits, including detailed service reports, as-built drawings, and inventory updates.
  • Adhere strictly to all workplace safety standards and protocols (e.g., OSHA guidelines), including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), ladders, and power tools.
  • Manage and maintain the inventory of parts, tools, and equipment within an assigned service vehicle, ensuring it is well-organized and sufficiently stocked for daily tasks.
  • Respond to emergency on-call service requests, sometimes after hours or on weekends, to address critical system failures and ensure client security is not compromised.
  • Collaborate effectively with project managers, other trade professionals (electricians, locksmiths), and IT personnel on job sites to ensure a smooth and integrated installation process.
  • Interface directly with clients in a professional and courteous manner, providing exceptional customer service, addressing concerns, and building trust as a knowledgeable security expert.
  • Mount and terminate various field devices, including magnetic locks, electric strikes, request-to-exit buttons, and glass break sensors, ensuring secure and reliable connections.
  • Perform firmware and software upgrades on system components to ensure security patches are applied and systems benefit from the latest features and performance improvements.
  • Conduct comprehensive site surveys to assess customer security needs, identify potential challenges, and gather the technical information required for accurate system design and quoting.
  • Replace and repair defective system hardware, including cameras, power supplies, hard drives, and control panels, often involving soldering and delicate electronic work.
  • Configure IP-based security devices on a client's network, which includes assigning static IP addresses, configuring subnets, and ensuring proper communication with the head-end server or cloud.
  • Ensure all work is completed to the highest standard of quality and craftsmanship, leaving the client's premises clean and orderly upon completion of the job.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Access Control Systems: In-depth knowledge of installing and servicing major access control platforms such as LenelS2, Genetec, C-Cure (Software House), Avigilon, or similar enterprise-level systems.
  • Video Surveillance (CCTV): Expertise in installing, configuring, and troubleshooting analog and IP-based camera systems, including NVRs/DVRs and VMS software (e.g., Milestone, ExacqVision).
  • Low-Voltage Wiring: Proficiency in pulling, terminating, and testing various types of low-voltage cabling, with a strong understanding of industry standards and electrical codes (NEC).
  • IP Networking: Solid understanding of basic networking principles, including TCP/IP, IP addressing, subnets, VLANs, and the ability to troubleshoot network connectivity issues for IP devices.
  • Intrusion/Alarm Systems: Experience with the installation and programming of commercial alarm panels and associated sensors (motion, door contacts, glass break).
  • Electronic Hardware: Familiarity with installing and wiring electronic door hardware, including magnetic locks, electric strikes, and electrified panic devices.
  • Tool Proficiency: Skilled in the safe and effective use of hand tools, power tools, and specialized diagnostic equipment like multimeters, toners, and network cable testers.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Ability to read and accurately interpret technical drawings, schematics, and installation manuals.
