Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Install, program, and commission a variety of electronic security systems, including access control, video surveillance (CCTV), intrusion detection, and intercom systems, according to manufacturer specifications and project plans.
  • Perform comprehensive system diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on malfunctioning security hardware, software, and network components to resolve service issues promptly.
  • Skillfully run, terminate, and test low-voltage cabling, including CAT5/CAT6, coaxial, and fiber optic cables, ensuring clean and compliant installations.
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance and system performance inspections to ensure long-term system reliability and identify potential issues before they become critical failures.
  • Read and accurately interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, technical schematics, and project specifications to guide installation and service activities.
  • Provide clear and concise end-user training to clients, demonstrating the proper use of their newly installed or serviced security systems and related software.
  • Manage and maintain an accurate on-site inventory of parts, tools, and equipment required for installation and service calls, ensuring readiness for any task.
  • Meticulously document all service and installation activities by completing detailed work orders, service reports, system logs, and as-built drawings.
  • Strictly adhere to all relevant safety standards, company policies, and national/local building and electrical codes (such as the NEC) during all on-site work.
  • Collaborate effectively with project managers, system engineers, and sales personnel to ensure projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and to the client's satisfaction.
  • Commission and thoroughly test newly installed systems to verify they meet all functional requirements, performance specifications, and design criteria.
  • Respond to emergency service requests and participate in on-call rotations to provide after-hours and weekend support for critical security system failures.
  • Mount and terminate a wide array of field devices, including IP and analog cameras, card readers, door strikes, magnetic locks, motion detectors, and control panels.
  • Configure IP-based security devices, including setting IP addresses, configuring network settings, and ensuring seamless integration onto the client's network infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot basic network connectivity issues impacting security equipment, such as packet loss, bandwidth problems, or incorrect switch port configurations.
  • Upgrade existing security systems by replacing outdated hardware, installing new components, and updating system software and firmware to the latest versions.
  • Perform site surveys at potential client locations to assess security vulnerabilities, determine system requirements, and assist in designing effective security solutions.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and deliver exceptional customer service during every client interaction, building trust and fostering positive relationships.
  • Integrate various security subsystems, such as linking access control events with video recording triggers, to create a cohesive and powerful security solution.
  • Keep abreast of new industry trends, emerging technologies, and evolving products by participating in manufacturer-led training, obtaining certifications, and pursuing self-study.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency with Access Control Systems (e.g., LenelS2, Genetec, C-CURE 9000, Pro-Watch, Brivo).
  • Deep knowledge of Video Management Systems (VMS) and CCTV technologies (e.g., Avigilon, Milestone, Genetec, ExacqVision, Hanwha).
  • Experience with commercial Intrusion Detection and Alarm Systems (e.g., Bosch, DMP, Honeywell).
  • Expertise in low-voltage cabling practices, including installation, termination (RJ45, BNC, fiber connectors), and testing.
  • Solid understanding of fundamental IP networking principles, including IP addressing, subnets, VLANs, and basic switch configuration.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints, electrical schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Competent use of power tools (drills, saws) and specialized hand tools for the security trade.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations, including the National Electrical Code (NEC).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-5 years of direct, hands-on experience in the installation and/or service of commercial electronic security systems.
