Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Greet guests warmly upon their arrival at the bar or table, establishing a positive and welcoming rapport to set the tone for their experience.
  • Present menus, make personalized recommendations, and answer all questions regarding food ingredients, preparation methods, and beverage pairings.
  • Craft and serve a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, including classic cocktails, house specialties, wine, and beer, with precision and consistency.
  • Accurately take and record food and beverage orders from guests, ensuring special requests and dietary restrictions are clearly communicated to the kitchen and bar staff.
  • Operate the Point of Sale (POS) system efficiently to enter orders, process payments, manage tabs, and handle cash and credit card transactions securely.
  • Monitor and maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of the bar area, dining tables, and service stations throughout the shift.
  • Proactively check on guests to ensure satisfaction with their meals and drinks, anticipating their needs and offering further service or assistance.
  • Responsibly serve alcoholic beverages by verifying the age of guests to prevent service to minors and identifying signs of intoxication to ensure guest safety.
  • Prepare and stock a variety of garnishes, syrups, and other bar ingredients before and during service to ensure readiness for all drink orders.
  • Skillfully manage multiple tasks simultaneously, such as taking orders from a table while mixing drinks for other patrons and processing a payment.
  • Address and resolve guest complaints or concerns with professionalism and empathy, escalating to management when necessary to ensure a positive outcome.
  • Collaborate effectively with kitchen staff, hosts, and other team members to ensure a smooth flow of service and timely delivery of all orders.
  • Upsell and cross-sell menu items and promotional specials by using descriptive language and expert knowledge to enhance the guest experience and increase revenue.
  • Perform opening and closing duties, including restocking inventory, cleaning equipment, setting up service areas, and reconciling cash drawers.
  • Adhere strictly to all food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety regulations and procedures as mandated by the health department and company policy.
  • Stay current with menu changes, daily specials, and beverage inventory to provide accurate and up-to-date information to guests.
  • Create and maintain an engaging and professional bar atmosphere, interacting with guests to build loyalty and encourage repeat business.
  • Assist in monitoring bar and service supply inventory levels, communicating shortages to management to facilitate timely reordering.
  • Polish glassware, silverware, and plate ware to maintain high standards of presentation and cleanliness.
  • Set up, maintain, and break down the bar and service areas, ensuring all equipment is in proper working order and all stations are fully prepared for service.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the training and onboarding of new servers, bartenders, and barbacks, sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Participate actively in pre-shift meetings to review specials, service notes, and team objectives for the day.
  • Contribute creative ideas for new cocktails, seasonal drink menus, or promotional events to enhance the beverage program.
  • Support fellow team members during peak periods by assisting with food running, bussing tables, or greeting guests.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Mixology & Drink Preparation: Demonstrated ability to mix a wide array of classic and contemporary cocktails with speed and accuracy.
  • POS System Proficiency: Experience operating modern Point of Sale systems like Toast, Aloha, Square, or similar platforms.
  • Wine & Spirit Knowledge: Deep understanding of different types of wine, beer, and spirits, including their origins, flavor profiles, and appropriate pairings.
  • Cash Handling & Transaction Management: Accuracy and integrity in handling cash, processing credit card payments, and managing open tabs.
    -Food Safety & Alcohol Service Certification: Possession of relevant certifications such as ServSafe, TIPS (Training for Intervention Procedures), or state-equivalent responsible alcohol service permits.
  • Inventory Control: Basic understanding of tracking stock levels, minimizing waste, and performing inventory counts for bar supplies.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Must meet the legal age requirement to serve alcohol.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate in Bartending, Mixology, or Hospitality Management.

  • Hospitality & Tourism Management

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of combined experience in a full-service restaurant or bar environment.

Preferred: Experience in a high-volume or fine-dining setting, demonstrating a proven ability to handle a demanding workload while maintaining high service standards.
