Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Actively participate in the complete rig-up and rig-down process, which includes spotting equipment, raising and lowering the derrick, and securing all components.
Operate and maintain a variety of manual and hydraulic power tongs to connect (make up) and disconnect (break out) downhole tubulars like tubing and rods.
Skillfully handle, sort, and move tubing, rods, and casing by latching and unlatching elevators, guiding sections into place, and stacking them on pipe racks.
Assist the Derrickhand in guiding the travelling block and elevators, ensuring proper alignment and safe movement of the pipe to and from the wellbore.
Perform rigorous and routine cleaning and maintenance of the rig floor, derrick, and associated equipment to maintain a safe, organized, and efficient work environment.
Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections on rig equipment, identifying and reporting any mechanical issues or potential failures to the Rig Operator.
Assist senior crew members in mixing and handling drilling fluids and chemicals, ensuring correct measurements and safe handling procedures are followed.
Operate and check fluid-handling equipment such as pumps and circulation tanks to ensure proper function during well servicing operations.
Serve as a dedicated fire watch during welding or other "hot work" activities, being prepared to respond immediately to any potential ignition.
Champion a safety-first culture by identifying, reporting, and mitigating potential hazards on the rig floor and surrounding work area.
Set and remove slips around the pipe to securely hold the tubular string in the wellbore during connections and disconnections.
Work in the vicinity of the wellhead, assisting in the installation and removal of Blowout Preventers (BOPs) and other well control equipment.
Communicate effectively with the Rig Operator and other crew members using a combination of hand signals and verbal commands amidst high-noise environments.
Ensure all tools and equipment are properly stored, inspected, and maintained, performing minor repairs as directed and reporting needs for major repairs.
Drive a crew truck or other company vehicles to and from the well site, often in remote locations and varying weather conditions.
Assist in the nippling up and nippling down of the Blowout Preventer (BOP) stack, a critical safety procedure in well control.

Secondary Functions

Actively participate in daily safety meetings, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and pre-tour meetings to review operational plans and safety procedures.
Assist in maintaining an accurate inventory of rig supplies, tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE), reporting any shortages to the supervisor.
Mentor and provide on-the-job training to new or less-experienced "Green Hands," demonstrating safe work practices and proper techniques.
Complete required operational and safety paperwork, such as vehicle inspection reports or participation logs for safety drills.
Perform general upkeep and grounds maintenance of the well site lease to ensure it remains clean, safe, and environmentally compliant.
Support specialized operations as needed, such as fishing jobs, well completions, or abandonment procedures, by providing hands-on assistance.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Proficiency in operating power tongs, slips, and elevators for handling tubular goods.
Knowledge of rig-up, rig-down, and general service rig operational procedures.
Basic mechanical aptitude for performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on rig equipment.
Understanding of well control principles and the function of Blowout Preventers (BOPs).
Valid and current safety certifications, including H2S Alive and Standard First Aid/CPR.
A valid driver's license (often Class 5 or equivalent) with a clean abstract, and the ability to operate manual transmission vehicles.

Typical Experience Range:

0-2 years in a physically demanding, outdoor role.

Preferred:

Previous experience in the oil and gas industry, particularly as a Roustabout or in a similar general labor position, is highly advantageous. Experience operating heavy equipment or working in construction or farming is also considered valuable.
