Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive diagnostic tests on mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems using advanced diagnostic tools and software to accurately identify faults and malfunctions.
  • Execute complex repairs on engines, transmissions, drivetrains, and braking systems, adhering to manufacturer specifications and established service procedures.
  • Conduct thorough preventative maintenance (PM) services, including fluid changes, filter replacements, and multi-point inspections to prevent future breakdowns and ensure equipment longevity.
  • Disassemble and reassemble major components and equipment to facilitate repairs, cleaning, and detailed inspection of internal parts for wear and tear.
  • Troubleshoot and repair intricate vehicle and equipment electrical systems, including wiring harnesses, sensors, control modules, and lighting components.
  • Service and repair hydraulic systems by replacing hoses, rebuilding cylinders, and diagnosing pump and valve issues to restore full functionality.
  • Utilize technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and computer-based schematics to guide troubleshooting processes and ensure repairs are performed correctly the first time.
  • Perform precision tasks such as welding, fabrication, and machining to repair or create custom components as needed for specific jobs.
  • Mount, balance, and install tires, and perform four-wheel alignments using computerized alignment equipment to ensure vehicle safety and performance.
  • Service and recharge air conditioning (HVAC) systems in compliance with all environmental regulations and certification standards.
  • Diligently and accurately document all services performed, parts used, and labor time on detailed work orders for proper billing and service history tracking.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, consistently adhering to all company safety protocols and OSHA regulations.
  • Road test vehicles or operate equipment post-repair to verify that the identified issue has been resolved and the system is functioning correctly under operational conditions.
  • Provide clear and concise explanations of diagnoses and recommended repairs to service advisors and, when necessary, directly to customers.
  • Calibrate and maintain shop tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working order and provide accurate readings for quality repairs.
  • Inspect and test-drive vehicles and equipment, both before and after repairs, to confirm problem symptoms and validate the effectiveness of the completed work.
  • Perform complex engine and transmission swaps, rebuilds, and overhauls according to OEM standards.
  • Diagnose and repair advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), including calibrating cameras and sensors.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in managing shop parts inventory by identifying needed parts, submitting orders, and tracking stock levels to minimize downtime.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job guidance to apprentice technicians, sharing knowledge and best practices to foster team development and skill growth.
  • Participate in ongoing technical training and certification programs to stay current with new vehicle technologies and evolving repair techniques.
  • Support the service manager with creating repair estimates by providing accurate labor time projections and a comprehensive list of required parts.
  • Operate forklifts and other heavy machinery to move large components and equipment safely within the service facility.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency with electronic diagnostic equipment, scan tools, and computer-based service information systems (e.g., AllData, Mitchell 1).
  • In-depth knowledge of internal combustion engines (gasoline and diesel), transmissions, and drivetrain components.
  • Strong understanding of 12V/24V electrical systems, including the ability to read and interpret complex wiring diagrams.
  • Expertise in hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including diagnostics and component repair/rebuilding.
  • Competency in welding (MIG, TIG, or Stick) and light metal fabrication for structural repairs.
  • Deep experience with modern brake systems, including ABS/traction control, and suspension/steering systems, including electronic steering.
  • HVAC system diagnostics and repair, including holding relevant certifications (e.g., EPA 609).
  • Ability to properly use and maintain a wide variety of hand tools, power tools, and heavy shop equipment (e.g., vehicle lifts, presses, lathes).
  • Familiarity with tire mounting, balancing, and alignment machines.
  • Knowledge of DOT inspection requirements and procedures.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or Certificate from a vocational or technical college.

  • Mechanics & Repair Technologies

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5+ years of hands-on experience in a professional shop or service environment.

Preferred: ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications, especially in relevant specialties (e.g., A1-A8 for auto, T-series for trucks), are highly desirable and may be required for senior positions. Manufacturer-specific training is a significant plus.
