Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Precisely read and interpret complex blueprints, engineering drawings, and work orders to determine welding requirements and component specifications.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate tack welding equipment (typically MIG or TIG) to join metal components in preparation for final welding.
  • Accurately position, align, and fit parts together using jigs, fixtures, clamps, and other holding devices to ensure they meet strict dimensional tolerances.
  • Perform high-quality tack welds at designated points to temporarily secure parts, preventing distortion and misalignment during subsequent handling and welding.
  • Utilize hand and power tools, including grinders, sanders, and buffers, to clean and prepare surfaces and smooth welds for a finished appearance.
  • Conduct in-process visual and measurement inspections on tacked assemblies using tape measures, calipers, squares, and gauges to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues with parts, equipment, or assembly processes, making minor adjustments or reporting significant problems to the team lead or supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area by adhering to 5S principles and company-wide safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on welding equipment, including changing tips, liners, and wire spools, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Work collaboratively with other operators, welders, and quality inspectors to ensure a smooth and efficient production flow from start to finish.
  • Accurately document production activities, including parts used, assemblies completed, and any deviations from the standard process, in the manufacturing execution system (MES).
  • Adhere strictly to all personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, including wearing welding helmets, gloves, safety glasses, and flame-retardant clothing.
  • Manage and monitor inventory of welding consumables such as wire, gas, and tips, reporting shortages to ensure continuous operation.
  • Assist in the setup and changeover of production lines for different products or assembly runs.
  • Operate overhead cranes or other material handling equipment to safely move large or heavy components to and from the workstation.
  • Grind, deburr, and clean parts prior to tacking to ensure a strong, contaminant-free weld joint.
  • Mark and identify assemblies with appropriate part numbers or identifiers for traceability throughout the production process.
  • Actively participate in daily team meetings and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Follow standardized work instructions meticulously to guarantee consistency and quality across all units produced.
  • Adjust machine settings for voltage, amperage, and wire speed based on the material type, thickness, and specific application requirements.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc fabrication tasks and assist in other assembly areas as needed to meet production deadlines.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement process by providing practical feedback on fixture design, process flow, and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with engineering and quality assurance teams to resolve recurring defects and implement corrective actions.
  • Participate in safety audits and committee meetings to help foster a culture of safety and awareness within the facility.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Tack Welding Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to perform tack welds, primarily using MIG (GMAW) and sometimes TIG (GTAW) processes on various metals like steel and aluminum.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: The ability to read, interpret, and work from detailed technical drawings, work orders, and manufacturing specifications.
  • Measurement & Inspection Tools: Skilled in using tape measures, calipers, protractors, height gauges, and squares for precise part fitting and quality checks.
  • Hand & Power Tool Operation: Competent in the safe use of angle grinders, die grinders, drills, and other fabrication tools.
  • Jig and Fixture Setup: Experience in setting up and using jigs, fixtures, and clamps to hold parts in place for welding.
  • Basic Equipment Maintenance: Knowledge of how to perform basic maintenance on welding machines and equipment.
  • Shop Mathematics: Strong understanding of basic math, including fractions and geometry, for calculating dimensions and angles.
  • Metal Fabrication Knowledge: Familiarity with different types of metals and their properties related to welding and forming.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 1-3 years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, or production assembly environment.

  • Direct experience as a Tack Welder or Tacking Operator in a fast-paced production setting is highly preferred. Experience working with jigs and fixtures and a strong ability to read blueprints are significant assets.
