Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Receive and evaluate customer garments and alteration requests, conducting detailed consultations to understand fit goals, fabric constraints, timeline expectations and budget considerations.
  • Accurately take body measurements using standardized techniques, record measurements in the customer profile, and recommend appropriate size adjustments or style modifications to achieve desired fit and proportions.
  • Perform comprehensive fit assessments during initial and follow-up fittings, pinning and marking garments on the customer, and recommending structural changes to patterns or construction as needed.
  • Adjust and alter patterns and garment pieces — including darts, seams, hems, waistbands and sleeves — to reconcile designer intent with individual body shapes while maintaining garment balance and silhouette.
  • Operate industrial and domestic sewing equipment (e.g., lockstitch, overlock/serger, blind-hem, buttonhole, bar tack, flatbed and cylinder-bed machines) safely and efficiently to execute alterations and custom construction.
  • Construct bespoke garments from scratch when required, including cutting fabric from patterns, assembling linings, setting sleeves, finishing collars and applying detailed handwork for luxury finishes.
  • Execute hand-sewing techniques (e.g., slip-stitching, basting, hand-sewn hems, pick-stitching and working with delicate trims) to ensure invisible or decorative finishes that meet couture or brand standards.
  • Work with a wide range of fabrics — woven, knit, silk, wool, denim, leather and technical textiles — applying appropriate handling, pressing and stitching techniques to avoid distortion or damage.
  • Reshape garments and perform structural alterations such as resizing jackets, tailoring shoulders, shortening or lengthening trousers, tapering sleeves, and reshaping collars and lapels to preserve design integrity.
  • Replace or repair hardware and components including zippers, buttons, linings, interfacing, shoulder pads and underlinings, ensuring long-term durability and restored functionality.
  • Evaluate fabric condition and recommend repair or replacement strategies when dealing with worn, faded or damaged garments; provide transparent cost and time estimates to customers.
  • Create and modify muslins, mock-ups or toile fittings where complex alterations or bespoke tailoring is necessary to perfect fit before final construction.
  • Maintain strict quality control standards, performing final inspections for stitch consistency, seam allowance accuracy, symmetry, pressing quality and finish prior to customer pickup or shipping.
  • Manage alteration workflow and scheduling to ensure efficient turnaround times, prioritize rush orders and communicate realistic completion dates to clients and sales staff.
  • Collaborate with retail sales associates, designers, patternmakers and production teams to resolve fit issues, share technical feedback and implement repeatable solutions across product lines.
  • Document alteration details and maintain accurate customer records, alteration tickets and measurement histories to provide consistent service on return visits and for future orders.
  • Advise customers on garment care, alteration longevity and styling options post-alteration; recommend preservation methods for delicate or special occasion garments.
  • Train and mentor junior tailors, alteration technicians and apprentices in sewing techniques, machine maintenance, fitting best practices and safety protocols to build team competency.
  • Maintain tools, equipment and workspace cleanliness and safety, perform routine maintenance on sewing machines and pressing equipment, and coordinate repairs or replacements as required.
  • Support bespoke and made-to-measure services by developing templates, fitting charts and pattern libraries to standardize measurements and speed up repeat productions.
  • Monitor inventory of consumables (thread, needles, interfacing, buttons, zippers) and specialty materials, placing orders and coordinating with procurement or store management to avoid service delays.
  • Implement cost-control practices when selecting repair methods and materials, balancing quality outcomes with profitability targets for alteration services.
  • Participate in fittings and quality reviews for sample development and production sampling, providing practical tailoring input to improve factory outputs and reduce alteration rates.

  • Basic use of CAD or digital pattern tools (e.g., Gerber, Lectra, Optitex) and measurement software is a plus for sample shops and production environments.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
