Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct professional client fittings, taking precise body measurements and pinning garments to accurately determine the scope of necessary adjustments for a perfect fit.
  • Perform a wide range of high-quality alterations on men's, women's, and children's clothing, including but not limited to hemming, taking in/letting out seams, adjusting shoulders, and tapering.
  • Expertly operate and maintain industrial and domestic sewing machines, sergers, blind stitch machines, and other specialized tailoring equipment.
  • Work proficiently with a variety of delicate and challenging fabrics, such as silk, leather, chiffon, denim, and suiting materials, applying appropriate techniques for each.
  • Advise clients on proper garment fit, style, and proportion, offering professional recommendations to enhance the look and comfort of their apparel.
  • Re-shape and re-style garments according to client requests, which may include modernizing vintage pieces or significantly changing a garment's silhouette.
  • Execute complex tailoring tasks such as re-lining jackets, replacing zippers, constructing functional buttonholes, and performing intricate beadwork or embroidery repairs.
  • Manage and prioritize a personal workflow of alteration tickets and customer orders to ensure timely completion and meet established deadlines.
  • Press, steam, and finish garments after alterations to ensure a clean, professional, and presentation-ready appearance.
  • Meticulously inspect all finished garments to guarantee they meet the highest standards of quality, precision, and craftsmanship before client pickup.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the tailoring and fitting room areas.
  • Communicate effectively with sales associates, stylists, and management to ensure a seamless customer experience from purchase to final fitting.
  • Accurately estimate the time and cost required for various alteration jobs and clearly communicate this information to clients or staff.
  • Deconstruct and reconstruct garment sections as needed to perform alterations without compromising the original design integrity and structure.
  • Address and resolve any client concerns regarding garment fit or quality with professionalism and a solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Stay current with fashion trends, new tailoring techniques, and advancements in fabrics and garment technology.
  • Create or modify patterns to execute custom orders or complex alterations that go beyond standard adjustments.
  • Manage the fitting schedule, ensuring appointments are booked efficiently and adequate time is allocated for each client consultation.
  • Perform detailed repairs on damaged garments, including patching, darning, and reweaving, to restore them to their original condition.
  • Attach buttons, snaps, hooks, and other hardware with precision, ensuring they are secure and correctly placed.

  • Maintain an accurate inventory of tailoring supplies such as thread, zippers, buttons, and interfacing, and place orders for new materials as needed.
  • Assist in training and mentoring apprentice tailors or new team members on company standards, techniques, and equipment operation.
  • Collaborate with the visual merchandising team to ensure floor samples and display garments are impeccably steamed and presented.
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss workflow improvements, client feedback, and strategies for enhancing the alterations service.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert Sewing & Construction: Mastery of both hand and machine sewing techniques, including knowledge of different stitches, seams, and finishing methods.
  • Garment Fitting and Pinning: The ability to expertly pin garments on a client's body to achieve the desired fit and accurately mark for alterations.
  • Fabric Knowledge: Deep understanding of how different types of fabrics (wovens, knits, leather, etc.) behave, stretch, and drape, and how to handle them correctly.
  • Pattern Making & Adjustment: Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and modifying commercial patterns, or drafting simple patterns from scratch.
  • Equipment Proficiency: Skilled in operating and performing basic maintenance on industrial sewing machines, sergers, blind hemmers, and professional-grade steam irons.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-5+ years of professional experience in a tailoring or alterations role.

  • A portfolio of work demonstrating a range of alteration and/or custom creation skills is highly desirable.
  • Experience with bespoke or made-to-measure suiting is a significant plus.
