Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret complex engineering blueprints, fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and technical specifications to determine project requirements and fabrication sequences.
  • Accurately lay out, measure, and mark dimensions and reference points on metal stock and plates for cutting, drilling, and forming.
  • Set up and operate a wide range of fabrication machinery, including plate rolls, press brakes, shears, and ironworkers, to cut and form steel components to required dimensions.
  • Precisely fit, align, and tack-weld components such as shells, heads, nozzles, manways, and structural supports according to blueprints and layout markings.
  • Execute high-quality, structurally sound welds using various processes, primarily Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) and Submerged Arc Welding (SAW), on carbon and stainless steel.
  • Perform multi-pass welds in all positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead) on thick plate materials, ensuring complete penetration and adherence to Weld Procedure Specifications (WPS).
  • Operate overhead cranes, jib cranes, and forklifts safely and efficiently to handle and position large, heavy steel plates and fabricated assemblies.
  • Utilize thermal cutting processes, such as plasma arc and oxy-fuel cutting, for manual and automated cutting of parts and beveling of plate edges for weld preparation.
  • Grind, chip, and finish welds and surfaces using portable grinders and other hand tools to meet specified aesthetic and quality standards.
  • Conduct dimensional inspections and quality checks throughout the fabrication process using tools like tape measures, levels, squares, and calipers to ensure accuracy.
  • Prepare and fit shell courses for automated welding, ensuring proper root opening, alignment, and roundness to maintain tank integrity.
  • Install and weld internal and external components, including baffles, heating coils, ladders, platforms, and handrails, as specified in the project drawings.
  • Collaborate with shop supervisors and quality control inspectors to address any fabrication issues, non-conformances, or necessary rework.
  • Perform routine pre-use inspections and basic preventative maintenance on welding equipment and fabrication machinery to ensure they are in safe, working order.
  • Adhere rigorously to all company safety policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safe material handling practices.
  • Set up and monitor welding parameters (voltage, amperage, wire speed) on welding machines to achieve optimal results based on the material, thickness, and process.
  • Assist in the hydrostatic or pneumatic testing of completed tanks and vessels to verify weld integrity and check for leaks, documenting the results as required.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, contributing to the overall efficiency and safety of the fabrication shop.
  • Accurately document work performed, track time spent on specific jobs, and complete required production and quality control paperwork.
  • Work effectively as part of a fabrication team, communicating clearly with fitters, welders, and supervisors to ensure seamless workflow and project completion.

  • Assist with routine shop maintenance, equipment checks, and general housekeeping to ensure a safe and efficient operational environment.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by providing practical feedback on fabrication processes, tooling, and shop layout.
  • Work closely with engineering and quality control teams to clarify ambiguities in blueprints and suggest practical fabrication solutions or improvements.
  • Engage in daily toolbox talks, safety stand-downs, and other safety meetings to actively promote and maintain a culture of safety and awareness.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint and Schematic Interpretation: Advanced ability to read and understand complex fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and technical specifications.
  • Welding Proficiency (FCAW/SAW): Expertise in Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) and Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) on heavy plate.
  • Plate Fitting and Layout: Strong skills in laying out, fitting, and tacking large steel components with precision.
  • Operation of Fabrication Equipment: Proficient in operating plate rolls, press brakes, shears, and other heavy fabrication machinery.
  • Thermal Cutting: Skilled in using plasma and oxy-fuel cutting torches for manual cutting and weld preparation.
  • Overhead Crane and Rigging: Certified or highly experienced in safely operating overhead cranes and rigging heavy loads.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • AWS (American Welding Society) or other relevant welding certifications.
