Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Prepare and inspect drywall seams, joints, fasteners and substrates to ensure surfaces are ready for taping and finishing, identifying and correcting imperfections before applying joint compound.
- Apply joint tape (paper or fiberglass) and multiple coats of joint compound (mud) to seams, butt joints, corners, and fasteners to achieve the specified finish level (Level 0–5) for residential and commercial projects.
- Perform taping, bedding, filling, float, and finishing operations using knives, trowels, hawks, automatic taping tools, and finishing boxes to produce smooth, consistent surfaces.
- Mix, thin, and condition joint compound and setting-type products to manufacturer specifications, adjusting mixes for temperature and humidity to ensure proper set and workability.
- Skim coat large areas and apply full-surface finishing for high-end projects, ensuring uniform texture and eliminating visible tool marks, ridges, and seams.
- Sand and re-skim finished joints and surfaces between coats while minimizing dust and protecting surrounding finishes; employ dust-minimizing tools and containment methods when required.
- Install, set, and finish corner beads, corner tape, control joints, and other reinforcement materials at inside and outside corners to produce crisp, durable corners.
- Read, interpret, and follow blueprints, shop drawings, finish schedules, and specifications to deliver finishes that meet contract requirements and client expectations.
- Coordinate with drywall hangers, framers, painters, electricians, and other trade partners to maintain workflow, protect finished surfaces, and meet project milestones.
- Perform pre-paint inspection and certify that finished surfaces meet paint-ready standards, communicating defects and corrective plans to supervisors and painters.
- Operate mechanical lifts, scaffolding, stilts, ladders, and hand tools safely and efficiently to reach ceilings and high walls; set up work areas to optimize productivity and minimize rework.
- Complete finish repairs and touch-ups on renovations and occupied spaces with minimal disruption, including patching, blending, and color-matching textures when required.
- Maintain accurate records of materials used, labor hours, and progress to support project tracking, change orders, and cost control.
- Train, mentor, and provide on-the-job coaching to apprentice tapers and helpers to raise team skill levels and ensure consistent workmanship across crews.
- Estimate material quantities and labor needs for taping and finishing scopes, assist with job takeoffs, and provide practical feedback on scheduling and sequencing.
- Inspect completed work for quality control, document non-conforming items, and implement corrective actions to meet company and client quality standards.
- Apply specialty textures (knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel) and decorative finishes when specified, matching existing texture patterns on renovation projects.
- Adhere to all safety regulations, PPE requirements, and site-specific safety plans to reduce risk of injury and maintain OSHA/compliance standards.
- Maintain, clean, and perform routine maintenance on taping and finishing tools, sanders, vacuums, and mixers to prolong equipment life and ensure consistent performance.
- Manage time effectively to meet daily production targets while balancing quality expectations and minimizing material waste.
- Communicate proactively with project managers and superintendents about delays, material shortages, or scope changes that could impact schedule or quality.
- Prepare surfaces for specialty coatings (e.g., fire-rated finishes, level 5 skim coats) and coordinate with inspectors for sign-off when required by code or contract.
- Follow environmental and cleanup protocols to control dust, dispose of waste materials properly, and leave job sites secure and tidy at the end of each shift.
- Participate in pre-construction meetings and site walk-throughs to clarify finish standards, sequencing, and staging for taping and finishing activities.
- Utilize hand and power sanding tools with dust extraction systems to achieve final finish tolerances while complying with indoor air quality and dust control requirements.
- Adapt finishing techniques for a variety of building types and substrates, including metal stud walls, gypsum board, cement board, and specialty panels.
- Provide on-site problem solving for unexpected substrate issues, substrate movement, or irregular joints, recommending and implementing durable finishing solutions.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
- Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
- Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
- Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.
