Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Set up, operate, and monitor single or multi-spindle tapping machines to perform a series of machining operations such as drilling, boring, and tapping internal threads in metal or plastic workpieces.
- Interpret and work from complex engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and work orders to determine machining requirements, tooling, and operational sequences.
- Conduct rigorous first-piece, in-process, and final inspections of all machined parts using precision measuring instruments like micrometers, calipers, thread gauges, and optical comparators to ensure conformity to specifications.
- Select, install, and align appropriate cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto the tapping machine according to setup sheets and production requirements.
- Adjust machine controls, speeds, and feeds to optimize performance and ensure parts are machined within specified tolerances.
- Consistently meet or exceed established production targets and efficiency goals while maintaining the highest standards of quality and workmanship.
- Troubleshoot machine malfunctions and operational issues, making necessary adjustments to resolve problems and maintain production flow.
- Perform secondary operations such as deburring, cleaning, and finishing of tapped parts to prepare them for the next stage of production or assembly.
- Monitor tool life and replace worn or broken taps, drills, and other cutting tools in a timely manner to prevent damage to parts and equipment.
- Read and understand Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) symbols on blueprints to ensure parts meet critical dimensional requirements.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance on tapping machinery, including cleaning, lubricating, and making minor adjustments to ensure optimal performance and minimize downtime.
- Continuously observe machine operation to detect defects or out-of-tolerance machining and adjust controls as required.
- Manage workflow by prioritizing tasks based on production schedules, work orders, and instructions from supervisors.
- Diligently adhere to all company safety policies, OSHA guidelines, and best practices to maintain a safe and hazard-free working environment for yourself and your colleagues.
- Verify the conformance of finished workpieces to specifications, using various measuring instruments to check for accuracy of thread depth, pitch, and diameter.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area by adhering to 5S principles and good housekeeping practices.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain accurate and timely production records, including logs for part counts, scrap, and machine downtime.
- Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives, such as Kaizen events, to enhance productivity and reduce waste.
- Collaborate effectively with team leaders, quality assurance personnel, and engineers to resolve production issues and improve processes.
- Assist in the training and mentoring of new or less experienced machine operators, sharing knowledge and best practices.
- Carefully handle raw materials and finished components, ensuring proper storage and transport to prevent damage or contamination.

Hard Skills (Technical)
- Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, schematics, and work orders.
- Machine Operation: Proficient in setting up and operating tapping machines, drill presses, and similar equipment.
