Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Skillfully operate heavy paving equipment, including asphalt pavers, rollers, and skid steers, to lay and compact asphalt according to project plans and grade specifications.
Prepare paving sites by cleaning, sweeping, and applying tack coat to ensure proper adhesion of the new asphalt layer.
Manually spread and level hot mix asphalt using hand tools such as rakes, lutes, and shovels to achieve a uniform depth and smooth finish, especially in areas inaccessible to machinery.
Monitor and control the temperature of the asphalt as it is being delivered and laid to ensure it remains within the optimal range for compaction and durability.
Perform finishing work, which includes hand tamping edges, creating seamless joints between paving passes, and ensuring proper drainage contours.
Set up and maintain safe work zones around the paving area using traffic cones, signs, and barriers to protect the crew and the public.
Act as a spotter or guide for dump trucks and other vehicles delivering asphalt to the paver, ensuring safe and efficient unloading operations.
Conduct pre-operational checks on all machinery and equipment, reporting any malfunctions, maintenance needs, or safety concerns to the site foreman immediately.
Read and interpret site plans, blueprints, and grade stakes to ensure the paving work is performed to the correct dimensions, thickness, and slope.
Measure and mark out areas designated for paving, repair, or sealing, calculating the required volume of materials needed for the job.
Operate compaction equipment, such as plate compactors and vibratory rollers, to achieve the specified density and smoothness of the asphalt surface.
Perform joint and crack sealing activities to maintain existing pavement and prevent water intrusion and further deterioration.
Adhere strictly to all company, local, and federal safety regulations, including the consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Work collaboratively as part of a paving crew, communicating effectively with operators, drivers, and supervisors to ensure a coordinated and efficient workflow.
Assist in the mobilization and demobilization of the job site, including the loading, unloading, and transportation of equipment and materials.
Monitor weather conditions and their potential impact on paving quality, communicating with supervisors to make necessary adjustments to the work plan.
Use power tools such as asphalt saws and grinders for cutting, patching, and preparing surfaces for repair work.
Maintain a clean and organized work site by removing debris, cleaning tools, and properly storing materials at the end of each shift.
Participate actively in daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training sessions to foster a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
Ensure the quality of the finished product by visually inspecting the surface for imperfections, such as segregation, tearing, or unevenness, and taking corrective action.
