Primary Functions

  • Skillfully prepare ground surfaces for paving operations by cleaning, sweeping, and removing debris to ensure optimal adhesion and a smooth final product.
  • Apply tack coat, prime coat, or other bonding agents to existing surfaces using sprayers or hand tools, creating a stable base for the new asphalt layer.
  • Guide dump trucks and material transfer vehicles for the safe and efficient unloading of hot mix asphalt into the paver hopper.
  • Meticulously spread, level, and shape hot mix asphalt to specified thicknesses and grades using hand tools like rakes, lutes, and shovels to ensure a uniform surface.
  • Operate powered walk-behind equipment such as plate compactors and trench rollers to compact asphalt in areas inaccessible to larger rollers.
  • Assist the Paving Machine Operator by monitoring the flow of material, checking for segregation, and ensuring a consistent head of material is maintained.
  • Manually adjust the edges and joints of the asphalt mat to create clean, straight lines and seamless transitions between paving lanes.
  • Perform finishing work by hand-tamping around utility access points (manholes, water valves) and other obstructions to achieve full compaction and a smooth finish.
  • Set and check string lines and other grade control references to ensure the paved surface meets precise elevation and slope requirements as per project plans.
  • Control and direct traffic around the work zone by setting up, maintaining, and removing signs, cones, and barricades to ensure the safety of the crew and the public.
  • Measure and mark out paving areas according to blueprints and site plans, assisting surveyors and supervisors with layout tasks.
  • Operate a pavement saw to cut straight, clean joints for repairs, tie-ins, or the installation of induction loops and utilities.
  • Apply joint sealant materials to protect the pavement from water intrusion and extend its lifespan.
  • Work with various asphalt mixtures, including hot mix, cold patch, and specialty blends, understanding their different handling and application requirements.
  • Conduct basic quality control checks, such as monitoring temperature, checking for surface irregularities, and ensuring proper compaction is achieved.
  • Load and unload construction materials, tools, and equipment from vehicles and trailers at the beginning and end of each shift.
  • Perform general site cleanup, gathering and disposing of waste materials to maintain a safe and organized work environment.
  • Communicate effectively and constantly with other crew members, equipment operators, and supervisors to coordinate tasks and ensure safe operations.
  • Adhere rigorously to all company and regulatory safety policies, including the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Assist in patching and repairing damaged sections of pavement, which involves removing the old material, preparing the area, and applying new asphalt.
  • Operate small equipment such as skid steers or compact loaders for material handling and site preparation tasks.
