Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Research, outline, write, and edit new and existing high-quality technical documentation, including API reference guides, developer tutorials, user manuals, and integration guides.
  • Collaborate closely with software developers, quality assurance engineers, and product managers to ensure the technical accuracy and clarity of all documentation.
  • Learn and utilize a documentation-as-code toolchain, using Markdown, Git, and static site generators to publish content.
  • Take ownership of documentation for specific product features, from the initial draft through review and final publication.
  • Translate complex product information and technical specifications into clear, concise, and easy-to-understand content for a diverse audience.
  • Update and maintain the existing documentation library to reflect changes in the product, new features, and user feedback.
  • Create and edit screenshots, diagrams, and short video tutorials to visually supplement written documentation and improve comprehension.
  • Test documentation against the product to validate procedures, examples, and ensure a seamless user experience.
  • Participate in peer reviews of documentation, providing and receiving constructive feedback to improve the quality of the team's output.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders and subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather information and understand content requirements.
  • Manage multiple documentation projects simultaneously, effectively prioritizing tasks and meeting established deadlines.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the target audience's needs and tailor content to their technical proficiency and goals.
  • Assist in planning the structure and organization of the documentation portal to improve information architecture and discoverability.
  • Author clear and concise release notes for new product versions, detailing new features, bug fixes, and breaking changes.
  • Write explanatory knowledge base articles and FAQs to address common customer support issues and reduce ticket volume.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the development and maintenance of the team's content style guide and glossary to ensure consistency across all documentation.
  • Contribute to the content strategy by identifying documentation gaps, suggesting improvements, and analyzing user feedback.
  • Participate in scrum meetings, sprint planning, and other agile ceremonies to stay aligned with development cycles.
  • Assist in auditing the existing documentation for outdated content, broken links, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Explore new documentation tools and technologies and provide recommendations for process enhancements.
  • Help manage the documentation backlog by triaging requests and feedback from both internal and external users.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Exceptional command of the English language, with outstanding skills in writing, editing, and proofreading.
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex technical concepts and explain them in a simple, clear, and engaging manner.
  • Familiarity with markup languages such as Markdown or HTML.
  • Basic understanding of or strong desire to learn version control systems, particularly Git and platforms like GitHub or GitLab.
  • Experience with creating visual aids like screenshots, GIFs, or diagrams using tools like Snagit, Figma, or similar.
  • Ability to read and understand code snippets in languages such as Python, JavaScript, or Java is a strong plus.
  • Familiarity with API concepts (e.g., REST, JSON) and experience documenting them is highly desirable.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree, or a recent graduate.
