This role requires a curious, motivated, and detail-oriented Technical Writing Intern to join our dynamic product and engineering organization. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Collaborate closely with software developers, product managers, and quality assurance engineers to deeply understand product features, use cases, and documentation requirements.
  • Write, edit, and maintain comprehensive end-user documentation, including user guides, getting-started tutorials, installation manuals, and extensive online help systems.
  • Develop clear, concise, and accurate API documentation, code samples, and developer-focused guides for our technical audience.
  • Create and update internal process documentation, knowledge base articles, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for engineering and customer support teams.
  • Assist in planning the information architecture and structure of new documentation sets from initial concept to final publication.
  • Master the art of transforming highly technical and complex information into easily digestible content for users with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • Use screen captures, diagrams, flowcharts, and other visual aids to enhance the clarity, engagement, and usability of technical content.
  • Review and edit documentation authored by peers and subject matter experts to ensure it meets our standards for consistency, clarity, tone, and grammatical accuracy.
  • Participate in product design reviews and development meetings to provide valuable input on user experience (UX) writing and interface text.
  • Manage documentation projects using agile methodologies, tracking progress and reporting status in project management tools like Jira or Confluence.
  • Learn and apply documentation-as-code principles, utilizing tools like Git, Markdown, and static site generators (e.g., Hugo, Jekyll) for version control and publishing.
  • Meticulously test documented procedures and tutorials against the live product to guarantee accuracy, completeness, and effectiveness.
  • Gather and analyze feedback from customers, support teams, and other internal stakeholders to continuously identify areas for documentation improvement.
  • Maintain and enforce adherence to the company's content style guide, glossary, and overarching documentation standards.
  • Publish and manage content across various platforms, including developer portals, knowledge bases (e.g., Zendesk, Confluence), and in-app help systems.
  • Assist in drafting and publishing detailed release notes for new product versions, effectively communicating new features, enhancements, and bug fixes.
  • Shadow senior technical writers and content strategists to learn best practices in content strategy, information architecture, and user-centered design.
  • Research, review, and evaluate new documentation tools and technologies to propose improvements to team efficiency and content delivery.
  • Convert legacy documentation from older formats (e.g., Microsoft Word, PDF) into modern, structured authoring systems like MadCap Flare or an XML-based framework.
  • Actively participate in usability testing sessions to observe how users interact with both the product and its supporting documentation, and then recommend changes based on findings.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the content strategy team by performing content audits to identify information gaps, redundancy, or outdated material.
  • Assist the corporate training team by repurposing technical documentation into scripts, outlines, or storyboards for training videos and webinars.
  • Contribute to the internal company-wide knowledge base to improve cross-departmental information sharing and team collaboration.
  • Participate actively in sprint planning and other agile ceremonies, serving as the voice of the user and representing documentation needs for upcoming features.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Exceptional American English writing, editing, and proofreading abilities with a meticulous eye for detail, grammar, and style.
  • Experience with or ability to quickly master documentation authoring tools (e.g., MadCap Flare, Confluence, ReadMe, Oxygen XML Editor).
  • Proficiency with markup languages such as Markdown, and a solid understanding of HTML/CSS fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with version control systems, particularly Git, and collaboration platforms like GitHub or GitLab.
  • Ability to create and edit high-quality diagrams, screenshots, and simple graphics using tools like Snagit, Figma, or Visio.
  • A foundational understanding of software development concepts, the Agile methodology, and the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Familiarity with API principles (e.g., REST, JSON) and experience reading or attempting to document APIs is a significant plus.
  • Experience writing for a technical audience, including developers, system administrators, or data scientists.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Currently enrolled in and actively pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited institution.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-1 years of professional or academic experience in writing, editing, or working in a technology-focused environment.

  • Previous internship experience in software development, quality assurance, or a writing-intensive role is highly desirable.
