Primary Functions

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of technical writers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment while supporting individual career growth through regular coaching, goal setting, and performance reviews.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive, long-term content strategy that aligns with product roadmaps and business goals, ensuring documentation is a key driver of user success and product adoption.
  • Establish, document, and enforce documentation standards, style guides, and robust quality assurance processes to ensure all content is consistent, accurate, clear, and maintains a professional tone and voice.
  • Oversee the entire documentation lifecycle for multiple product lines, from initial planning and authoring through to technical review, publishing, and ongoing maintenance and archival.
  • Collaborate closely with leaders in Product Management, Engineering, and UX Design to stay ahead of product changes and ensure documentation is developed in lockstep with the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Define, implement, and manage the information architecture for the organization's technical content ecosystem, ensuring a logical structure and intuitive navigation for all user-facing documentation.
  • Skillfully manage the team's workload and project pipeline, effectively prioritizing tasks, allocating writing resources, and communicating realistic timelines and expectations to all stakeholders.
  • Champion and drive the adoption of a "docs-as-code" methodology, integrating documentation workflows with engineering tools like Git and CI/CD pipelines to improve authoring efficiency and technical accuracy.
  • Evaluate, select, implement, and administer documentation tools and content management systems (CMS) to optimize team-wide authoring, review, and publishing workflows.
  • Act as the final editor and quality gatekeeper for high-impact or particularly complex documentation, providing constructive, detailed feedback to writers to elevate the quality of their work.
  • Analyze user feedback, customer support tickets, and web analytics data to identify areas for documentation improvement, measure content effectiveness, and make data-driven decisions.
  • Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for the documentation team and report on progress to senior leadership, clearly demonstrating the value and impact of high-quality technical content on the business.
  • Proactively engage with customer-facing teams, including Technical Support, Customer Success, and Sales Engineering, to deeply understand user pain points and ensure documentation addresses common questions and critical issues.
  • Oversee the planning and creation of a diverse range of content types, including API documentation, SDK guides, in-app help text, release notes, conceptual articles, tutorials, and knowledge base articles.
  • Lead the full lifecycle of talent acquisition for the team, including defining roles, sourcing candidates, conducting interviews, and hiring top-tier technical writing talent to scale the team's capabilities.

  • Plan and manage the departmental budget, including making strategic decisions about staffing, tooling, vendor contracts, and professional development expenses.
  • Roll up your sleeves to write or substantively edit critical documentation during periods of high demand or for particularly complex, high-visibility projects.
  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep expertise in modern documentation authoring tools and platforms (e.g., MadCap Flare, Paligo, Oxygen XML, Confluence, ReadMe).
  • Proven proficiency with "docs-as-code" workflows and toolchains, including Git, Markdown, and static site generators (e.g., Hugo, Jekyll, Docusaurus).
  • Strong command of information architecture principles, content modeling, and structured authoring methodologies (like DITA or DocBook).
  • Demonstrable experience documenting complex technical products, including REST APIs, SDKs, and enterprise-level B2B software.
  • Thorough understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) methodologies, particularly Agile and Scrum frameworks.
  • Foundational ability to read and understand code snippets in common languages (e.g., Python, Java, JavaScript) to validate technical documentation.
  • Experience with content analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics) and using data to measure documentation effectiveness and inform content strategy.
