Primary Functions

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as the primary point of contact for the documentation team, building strong partnerships with Product Management, Engineering, UX Design, and Customer Support to ensure content is accurate, relevant, and meets user needs.
  • Process and Tooling Management: Define and refine the team's operational processes, including content workflows and review cycles, and oversee the selection, implementation, and maintenance of authoring tools, content management systems (CMS/CCMS), and other technologies.
  • Performance Metrics and Reporting: Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure documentation effectiveness, user satisfaction, and team productivity, reporting on these metrics to senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Content Lifecycle Management: Supervise the end-to-end documentation lifecycle, from initial audience analysis and content planning through writing, editing, publishing, and ongoing maintenance and archiving.
  • Recruitment and Onboarding: Drive the hiring process for new technical writers, from defining job requirements and interviewing candidates to developing and implementing comprehensive onboarding plans for new team members.
  • User Advocacy: Champion a user-centric approach to documentation, using user feedback, analytics, and usability testing to make data-driven decisions that improve the content experience.
  • Information Architecture: Design and maintain a scalable and intuitive information architecture for documentation portals and knowledge bases, ensuring users can easily find the information they need.
  • Content Reuse and Single-Sourcing: Develop and implement content reuse and single-sourcing strategies using methodologies like DITA or topic-based authoring to maximize efficiency and consistency.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Proactively communicate project status, potential risks, and strategic initiatives to stakeholders at all levels, ensuring alignment and transparency.

Required Skills & Competencies

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 7-10+ years of progressive experience in technical writing or content development, including at least 3 years in a formal leadership, supervisory, or lead writer capacity.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience managing a distributed team of technical writers for complex B2B software or hardware products. A proven track record of developing and implementing a successful content strategy from the ground up, including the selection and integration of a CCMS or other authoring platform. Experience working within an Agile development framework is highly desirable.
