Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform a wide range of physical and chemical tests on fabrics, yarns, and finished garments, including tensile strength, tear resistance, seam slippage, pilling, and abrasion resistance.
- Conduct advanced colorfastness testing to various elements such as washing, crocking (wet/dry), light exposure, and perspiration to ensure color stability and longevity.
- Analyze and identify fiber composition and fabric construction using microscopy, chemical analysis, and other established analytical techniques.
- Evaluate material performance against stringent internal quality protocols and international industry standards, including AATCC, ASTM, and ISO.
- Meticulously document all test procedures and results, interpreting complex data to generate clear, concise, and actionable technical reports for stakeholders.
- Communicate analytical findings, risk assessments, and material recommendations effectively to cross-functional partners, including Product Development, Design, Sourcing, and Merchandising teams.
- Lead root cause analysis investigations for material failures, quality complaints, or production issues, providing technical solutions and corrective action plans.
- Develop, validate, and implement new testing methodologies and protocols to support the evaluation of innovative materials, sustainable fibers, and novel fabric finishes.
- Manage the calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all laboratory testing equipment to ensure operational accuracy and consistency.
- Review, approve, and provide constructive feedback on bulk production samples for color, hand-feel, weight, and overall appearance against approved standards.
- Maintain and manage the physical and digital library of approved material standards, lab dips, and technical specifications.
- Scrutinize and validate third-party lab reports and supplier test data to confirm accuracy and full compliance with our company's quality requirements.
- Ensure all materials, trims, and finished products rigorously adhere to global regulatory and restricted substance list (RSL) requirements, such as CPSIA, REACH, and Prop 65.
- Collaborate closely with the Research & Development team by providing technical testing support for new material developments and performance innovations.
- Create, update, and maintain comprehensive technical specification packages and quality assurance manuals for our material portfolio.
- Train and mentor junior lab technicians, interns, and cross-functional team members on proper testing procedures, equipment operation, and quality standards.
- Perform thorough risk assessments on new or unproven materials prior to adoption, highlighting potential performance issues and suggesting mitigation strategies.
- Manage the complete sample lifecycle, from submission by vendors and internal teams to final testing, reporting, and archival.
- Participate in and analyze results from wear-testing programs, correlating user feedback with laboratory performance data to build a holistic view of product durability.
- Analyze material performance data to identify trends, track supplier quality metrics, and provide data-driven insights for strategic sourcing decisions.
- Investigate and approve appropriate care label instructions based on fabric composition, construction, and performance test results.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Deep expertise in standard textile testing methodologies (AATCC, ASTM, ISO).
- Hands-on proficiency with a wide range of laboratory equipment (Spectrophotometer, Martindale/Wyzenbeek Abrasion Testers, Light Box, Tensile Tester, Crockmeter).
- Strong knowledge of fiber science and identification techniques (microscopy, chemical solubility, burn tests).
- Comprehensive understanding of textile manufacturing, including spinning, weaving, knitting, dyeing, printing, and finishing processes.
- Advanced skills in color science, including visual and digital color evaluation using a spectrophotometer and related software (e.g., Datacolor).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for data analysis, charting, and reporting.
- Experience working with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems and other quality management software.
