Primary Functions

- Skillfully negotiate fabric pricing, production lead times, and minimum order quantities (MOQs) with suppliers to achieve product margin targets and ensure manufacturing feasibility.
- Manage the end-to-end fabric development lifecycle, from initial concept, yarn development, and lab dips all the way to bulk production approval, ensuring all key milestones are met on the product calendar.
- Define, document, and enforce rigorous quality and performance standards for all textiles, collaborating closely with Quality Assurance teams to establish testing protocols based on AATCC, ASTM, or ISO standards.
- Drive the strategic integration of sustainable materials and circular economy principles into the product line, actively researching recycled, bio-based, regenerative fibers, and low-impact chemistries.
- Meticulously analyze and interpret technical textile test reports, troubleshooting any issues related to colorfastness, shrinkage, pilling, or physical properties, and providing clear corrective action plans to mills.
- Create, curate, and maintain a comprehensive physical and digital fabric library, meticulously cataloging detailed material specifications, supplier profiles, and historical costing data for team-wide access.
- Conduct continuous market and trend analysis to identify emerging textile technologies, innovative surface treatments, and novel yarn constructions that can provide a significant competitive edge.
- Collaborate with legal and compliance departments to ensure all materials strictly adhere to international regulations and chemical restrictions, such as REACH, ZDHC, and California Proposition 65.
- Serve as the primary technical liaison between the brand and its textile suppliers, effectively translating complex creative and performance requirements and proactively resolving production challenges.
- Develop and present educational materials, trend reports, and hands-on workshops for internal teams (design, merchandising, sales) to build their knowledge and understanding of textiles.
- Oversee the entire color approval process with an expert eye, managing lab dip submissions and ensuring impeccable color consistency from development samples to bulk production across multiple suppliers.
- Evaluate and onboard new mills and suppliers through a formal and thorough vetting process, which includes factory audits, ethical compliance checks, and technical capability assessments.
- Partner strategically with supply chain and logistics teams to optimize the flow of materials from the mill to the garment factory, proactively minimizing delays and mitigating potential risks.
- Prepare detailed material cost breakdowns and "should-cost" models to empower the sourcing team and support data-driven negotiation strategies.
- Champion high-impact material innovation projects, managing timelines, budgets, and cross-functional teams to bring new-to-market textiles from initial concept to successful commercialization.
- Author and maintain exceptionally detailed technical specification sheets (tech packs) for all approved materials, ensuring absolute clarity and accuracy for all stakeholders in the global supply chain.
- Travel internationally to visit textile mills, attend major industry trade shows (e.g., Premiere Vision, Intertextile), and conduct on-site quality inspections and production press checks.
- Advise on appropriate fabric care instructions and labeling requirements to ensure consumer satisfaction and full compliance with FTC and international trade standards.
