Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conceptualize, design, and develop original, innovative prints and patterns for various product categories, ensuring they align with the brand’s aesthetic and seasonal creative direction.
  • Conduct in-depth market research and trend analysis, studying fashion runways, trade shows, competitor landscapes, and cultural shifts to inform and inspire new design concepts.
  • Create and present seasonal mood boards, color palettes, and concept presentations to design leadership and cross-functional teams to establish a cohesive vision.
  • Develop intricate and technically precise, production-ready artwork, including creating seamless repeats, cleaning and recoloring purchased prints, and preparing detailed spec sheets for vendors.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Development, Merchandising, and Buying teams to ensure design feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with business objectives.
  • Manage the entire design lifecycle from initial sketch to final sample approval, meticulously reviewing strike-offs and lab dips for color, quality, and execution.
  • Maintain and meticulously organize the digital print and pattern library, ensuring all files are properly archived and accessible for future reference.
  • Create and manage seasonal color palettes, ensuring color consistency across different fabric bases and product lines.
  • Illustrate, sketch, and paint original motifs and layouts by hand or digitally, demonstrating a versatile artistic ability.
  • Communicate daily with overseas and domestic mills and vendors to provide clear design direction, troubleshoot production issues, and ensure timely delivery of samples.
  • Prepare detailed technical packages and artwork files, specifying repeat size, scale, color ways, and printing techniques.
  • Adapt and resize existing patterns for different product applications and scales, ensuring design integrity is maintained.
  • Participate in fit sessions and product reviews to ensure the textile design translates effectively onto the final garment or product.
  • Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, adhering to a fast-paced seasonal development calendar and meeting all deadlines.
  • Create compelling digital mockups and renderings of designs on products to help visualize the final look for internal presentations.
  • Research and experiment with new textile techniques, finishes, and fabrications to drive innovation within the product line.
  • Edit, manipulate, and color-reduce existing artwork and vintage prints to create fresh, on-brand interpretations.
  • Develop designs for various textile applications, including yarn-dyes, jacquards, and embroideries, in addition to printed patterns.
  • Stay current with design software and technologies, continuously seeking to improve workflow efficiency and creative capabilities.
  • Travel domestically and internationally as needed for market research, trend-spotting, and visiting manufacturing partners.
  • Prepare artwork for different printing methods, understanding the technical constraints and possibilities of digital, screen, and rotary printing.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Adobe Creative Suite Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator is non-negotiable, with strong skills in Adobe InDesign being highly valuable.
  • Repeat Pattern Creation: Demonstrable expertise in creating seamless, production-ready repeats for various fabric widths and printing methods.
  • Color Theory & Management: A sophisticated understanding of color theory and the proven ability to create, match, and manage seasonal color palettes.
  • Textile Knowledge: Strong technical knowledge of fabric constructions, printing techniques (digital, rotary, screen), dyeing processes, and finishing applications.
  • CAD for Textiles: Proficiency or familiarity with industry-specific CAD software such as NedGraphics, Lectra Kaledo, or similar programs is a significant advantage.
  • Technical Specifications: Ability to create clear, detailed technical packages and spec sheets for mills and factories.
  • Hand Illustration & Drawing: Strong artistic ability with excellent hand-sketching, drawing, and painting skills.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant creative field.
