Key Responsibilities and Required Skills for a Textile Inspector
💰 $45,000 - $65,000
🎯 Role Definition
A Textile Inspector is the guardian of quality within the apparel, home goods, and fabric manufacturing industries. This role is fundamentally responsible for ensuring that all textile materials and finished products meet or exceed the company's and client's established standards for quality, construction, and appearance. By meticulously examining materials at various stages of production—from raw fabric rolls to finished garments—the Inspector identifies, documents, and helps resolve defects. This hands-on position is critical for preventing substandard products from moving forward in the supply chain, thereby protecting brand reputation, minimizing financial loss, and ensuring customer satisfaction. You are the final checkpoint, the expert eye that ensures our commitment to excellence is woven into every fiber of our products.
📈 Career Progression
Typical Career Path
Entry Point From:
- Quality Control Technician (General Manufacturing)
- Apparel Production Assistant or Associate
- Fabric Cutter or Spreader with a keen eye for quality
Advancement To:
- Senior Textile Inspector / Quality Lead
- Quality Assurance (QA) Supervisor or Manager
- Fabric Sourcing Specialist or Manager
Lateral Moves:
- Garment Technologist

Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct comprehensive visual and physical inspections of raw materials, including fabric rolls and trims, using industry-standard methods like the 4-point system to identify and classify defects.
- Perform in-process quality checks on the production floor, monitoring sewing, cutting, and finishing operations to catch issues early and ensure adherence to specifications.
- Execute final inspections on finished garments or textile products based on Acceptable Quality Limit (AQL) sampling plans, verifying overall quality before shipment.
- Meticulously measure garments against approved technical specification sheets to ensure all points of measure (POM) are within the established tolerance.
- Evaluate fabric characteristics such as hand-feel, drape, and appearance against approved development samples and pre-production standards.
- Assess color continuity and shade variations across dye lots and production runs, utilizing a lightbox and comparing against approved color standards (e.g., Pantone swatches, lab dips).
- Scrutinize garment construction, including stitch quality, seam integrity, SPI (stitches per inch), and the correct application of labels, hardware, and trims.
- Identify, document, and clearly photograph all types of defects, from fabric flaws (slubs, holes, streaks) to construction errors (open seams, broken stitches, incorrect assembly).
- Generate detailed, accurate, and timely inspection reports that clearly communicate findings, defect classifications, and pass/fail/hold decisions to management, production, and sourcing teams.
- Physically segregate and tag defective materials or finished goods to prevent their accidental use or shipment, maintaining a clear quarantine area.
- Collaborate directly with production supervisors to provide real-time feedback on quality issues and assist in identifying the root cause of recurring defects.
- Review and thoroughly understand product technical packets (tech packs), including Bill of Materials (BOM), construction details, and finishing instructions, prior to inspection.
- Perform basic in-house textile tests for properties like colorfastness to crocking, fabric weight (GSM), and stretch/recovery to validate material performance.
- Ensure all products are correctly ticketed, folded, bagged, and packed according to specific customer requirements and shipping standards.
- Maintain a meticulous and organized digital and physical library of approved standards, samples, and inspection records for traceability and future reference.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in the training and onboarding of new inspectors or production team members, guiding them on our specific quality standards and inspection procedures.
- Participate in pre-production meetings to provide quality-focused input and anticipate potential manufacturing challenges based on product design and materials.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of quality control processes by providing data-driven suggestions for enhancing efficiency and defect detection.
- Support the Quality Assurance Manager in investigating customer complaints or returns related to product quality, helping to perform root cause analysis.
- Maintain and perform basic calibration of inspection tools and equipment, such as fabric inspection machines, lightboxes, and measuring tapes, to ensure accuracy.
- Liaise with third-party testing laboratories to coordinate sample submissions for more extensive chemical or physical performance testing when required.
