Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate and tend to a variety of textile machines, including but not limited to weaving looms, knitting machines, spinning frames, or tufting machines, to process yarn and fabric.
- Monitor machine operations closely, watching for breaks in yarn or thread, machine malfunctions, and other production issues to ensure continuous workflow.
- Inspect fabric, yarn, and other textile materials during and after processing to identify defects, such as snags, pulls, color variations, or miss-weaves, according to quality specifications.
- Adjust machine settings, such as tension, speed, and pattern inputs, to ensure the final product meets design and quality requirements.
- Load and unload materials onto machines, including mounting yarn packages on creels, positioning fabric rolls, and threading yarn through guides, needles, and rollers.
ar- Perform routine cleaning and basic preventative maintenance on machinery to ensure optimal performance and longevity, including oiling parts and removing lint or dust. - Read and interpret work orders, specification sheets, and production schedules to determine machine setup, material requirements, and operational sequences.
- Troubleshoot minor mechanical issues, such as yarn breaks or needle replacements, making necessary corrections to minimize production downtime.
- Maintain accurate production records, meticulously logging data such as material usage, number of units produced, downtime, and quality control checks.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols and procedures, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and following lockout/tagout (LOTO) guidelines.
- Patrol a designated area of the production floor to monitor multiple machines simultaneously, ensuring all are running efficiently and to standard.
- Doft, or remove, completed rolls of fabric or packages of yarn from machines and transport them to the next stage of the production process.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, maintenance personnel, and other operators regarding machine status, production issues, and quality concerns.
- Ensure the correct type, color, and size of yarn or raw material is being used for each production run as specified in the job order.
- Repair breaks in yarn or thread by cutting the broken ends and carefully tying or splicing them back together.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in the setup and changeover of machinery for different product runs, working alongside senior operators or setup technicians.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by providing feedback and suggestions for enhancing safety, quality, and production efficiency.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring floors are free of debris and tools are stored properly to promote a safe and efficient environment.
- Support inventory management by assisting with cycle counts and reporting discrepancies in raw material stock levels.
- Provide training and guidance to new or less experienced operators on machine operation and safety procedures as directed by a supervisor.
- Collaborate with the quality assurance team to understand defect trends and implement corrective actions at the machine level.
- Handle and dispose of textile waste and recyclable materials in accordance with company and environmental guidelines.
- Operate material handling equipment, such as pallet jacks or forklifts (if certified), to move raw materials and finished goods.
