Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Interpret and implement complex lighting plots, hookups, and other technical schematics provided by the Lighting Designer to prepare for the lighting hang.
Safely and securely rig, circuit, and patch a diverse range of conventional, LED, and automated lighting fixtures, ensuring correct power and data distribution.
Precisely focus all lighting instruments according to the designer's specifications, demonstrating a keen eye for detail, color, and beam shaping.
Program, edit, and manage cues on professional lighting control consoles (e.g., ETC Eos/Gio/Ion, GrandMA series) during technical rehearsals.
Operate the lighting console and/or followspot with split-second timing and accuracy during all performances, executing the show's lighting cues as called.
Conduct thorough pre-show system checks on all lighting, networking, and atmospheric effects equipment to guarantee show-ready status.
Perform routine and preventative maintenance on the entire lighting inventory, including cleaning fixtures, testing cables, and replacing lamps and consumables.
Execute systematic troubleshooting and rapid repair of lighting equipment, cabling, and control systems, often under high-pressure show conditions.
Work at height on ladders, personnel lifts, and catwalks, adhering to strict fall protection and overhead safety protocols at all times.
Collaborate directly with the Lighting Designer and Director during the tech process to achieve the desired visual aesthetics and dramatic moods.
Supervise the load-in, hang, focus, and strike of all lighting elements for each production, managing workflow and delegating tasks to other crew members.
Maintain a comprehensive and up-to-date inventory of all lighting equipment, accessories, and consumables, including gels, gobos, and lamps.

Secondary Functions

Assist other production departments (scenery, sound, video) with their tasks as needed, promoting a collaborative and supportive team environment.
Act as a supervisor and mentor for apprentices, interns, and over-hire electricians, providing clear instruction and professional guidance.
Maintain clean, organized, and safe working environments in all lighting-related spaces, including control booths, catwalks, and storage areas.
Participate actively in production meetings, technical notes sessions, and departmental planning to ensure clear communication and efficient workflow.

Manage the repair and maintenance log for all equipment, documenting issues and resolutions to track equipment reliability.
Stay current with advancements in lighting technology, control protocols, and industry best practices through independent research and professional development.
Assist in specifying and researching new equipment purchases and system upgrades to enhance the venue's capabilities.
Create and update essential paperwork for the lighting department, including channel hookups, patch sheets, and inventory lists.
Interface with rental houses and vendors for equipment needs, coordinating delivery, return, and integration of external gear.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Lighting Console Proficiency: Advanced operational knowledge of modern lighting consoles, particularly the ETC Eos family (Eos, Gio, Ion). Experience with MA Lighting or other platforms is a plus.
Electrical Expertise: Strong, practical understanding of electrical principles, power distribution, phase loading, and safe wiring practices for the stage.
Data Networking: Familiarity with lighting network protocols such as DMX512-A, RDM, sACN, and Art-Net for system setup and troubleshooting.
Rigging Skills: Proven ability in safe theatrical rigging practices, including tying common knots and correctly applying rigging hardware.
Equipment Maintenance: Demonstrable skill in repairing and maintaining conventional and intelligent lighting fixtures, cables, and connectors, including basic soldering.
Plot Interpretation: The ability to read, understand, and execute complex technical drawings, including lighting plots and schematics (experience with Vectorworks/Lightwright is highly desirable).
Safety Certifications: Certifications or training in working at height, fall arrest systems, and electrical safety are strongly preferred.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent, coupled with significant professional experience.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.F.A.) in Technical Theatre, Theatre Design & Production, or a related field.
Completion of a vocational or certificate program in stage electrics or technical production.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

2-5 years of professional experience as a lighting technician in a live theatre, repertory, or equivalent professional event production environment.

Demonstrable experience working with a variety of performance types, such as musicals, straight plays, dance, and opera.
Experience on a touring production or in a large-scale venue is highly advantageous.
