Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop comprehensive theatrical programs and narratives by leading workshops and interviews with clients, user groups, and stakeholders to define the venue's artistic mission and operational goals.
  • Create detailed space and functional planning studies for all front-of-house and back-of-house areas, ensuring efficient flow and functionality for staff, performers, and patrons.
  • Design and document innovative and safe performance rigging systems, including manual and automated counterweight systems, fixed grids, and flexible tension wire grids.
  • Generate and analyze detailed seating layouts and conduct thorough 3D sightline studies to guarantee excellent and equitable views from every seat in the house.
  • Prepare detailed planning concepts and design options through sketches, diagrams, 3D models, and written narratives to communicate ideas effectively to the project team and client.
  • Author comprehensive theatrical equipment specifications and performance criteria for lighting, audio, video, and communication systems, forming the basis for procurement and bidding.
  • Collaborate intensively with the architectural design team to integrate theatrical requirements seamlessly into the building's overall form, structure, and aesthetics.
  • Coordinate directly with MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) and structural engineers to ensure that the building's infrastructure can support the unique demands of theatrical systems.
  • Produce highly detailed theatre-specific drawings, plans, sections, and details using CAD and BIM software (like AutoCAD and Revit) for inclusion in construction document sets.
  • Review and provide expert commentary on architectural and engineering construction documents at all project phases to ensure compliance with theatrical design intent.
  • Advise the design team on material selection and finishes to achieve desired acoustical performance and durability within performance spaces.
  • Conduct on-site inspections and construction administration duties, reviewing installations of theatrical equipment and architectural elements to ensure quality and adherence to specifications.
  • Develop and manage detailed budgets for theatrical equipment systems, providing cost estimates and value engineering options throughout the design process.
  • Research and stay at the forefront of emerging technologies in stage machinery, lighting, and digital media to provide clients with forward-looking solutions.
  • Prepare and deliver compelling presentations to clients, architectural review boards, and public stakeholders to build consensus and support for the design.
  • Guide the client through the complex process of theatrical equipment bidding, procurement, and contractor selection.
  • Develop detailed design reports and feasibility studies that analyze existing conditions and propose solutions for venue renovations or new builds.
  • Ensure all theatre design elements comply with relevant life safety codes, building regulations, and ADA accessibility standards.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior designers and technicians within the consulting practice, fostering their professional growth.
  • Assist in business development efforts by contributing to proposals, attending interviews for new projects, and representing the firm within the industry.
