Core Responsibilities

The day-to-day duties of a Therapeutic Recreation Aide are dynamic and centered on direct interaction with participants.

Primary Functions

  1. Implement and lead a diverse schedule of small and large group recreational programs, including arts and crafts, music therapy, gentle fitness, cognitive games, and social events.
  2. Provide one-on-one sensory stimulation and personalized activities for individuals who are unable to participate in group settings due to physical or cognitive limitations.
  3. Actively encourage and motivate residents/patients to participate in activities, building rapport and understanding their individual preferences and histories.
  4. Safely transport individuals to and from activity locations within the facility, assisting with mobility aids such as wheelchairs and walkers as needed.
  5. Adapt activities and instructions on the fly to meet the specific needs, abilities, and energy levels of the participants in any given session.
  6. Diligently observe and monitor participant responses, engagement levels, and any changes in physical or emotional state during activities.
  7. Meticulously document participant attendance, progress notes, and any significant observations in official records or electronic health systems in a timely manner.
  8. Assist in the comprehensive assessment of new participants to help identify their recreational interests, strengths, and therapeutic needs.
  9. Contribute to the development of individual care plans by providing direct feedback to the supervising specialist on participant goals and progress.
  10. Prepare, set up, and dismantle activity areas, ensuring all supplies, equipment, and spaces are clean, safe, and organized before and after use.
  11. Maintain a detailed inventory of recreation supplies and equipment, notifying the supervisor when items need to be reordered or repaired.
  12. Foster a warm, welcoming, and positive atmosphere that promotes social interaction, self-esteem, and a sense of community among participants.
  13. Guide and assist volunteers who are helping with recreational programming, providing them with clear instructions and support.
  14. Escort and supervise participants during community outings and special events, ensuring their safety and enjoyment.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc program development by researching and suggesting new, creative activity ideas tailored to the population's interests.
  • Contribute to the creation and distribution of monthly activity calendars and promotional flyers to keep residents and families informed.
  • Assist in planning and executing large-scale special events, holiday parties, and family nights.
  • Participate actively in interdisciplinary team meetings, care conferences, and departmental staff meetings to advocate for recreational needs.
  • Uphold all facility policies and procedures, particularly those related to patient rights, confidentiality (HIPAA), and safety protocols.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0 - 2+ years of experience.

  • Volunteer or professional experience leading group activities is highly valued.
