- Develop individualized therapeutic recreation treatment plans using evidence-based interventions that address cognitive retraining, motor skills, activities of daily living (ADL) support, social skills, community reintegration, mood regulation, and meaningful leisure pursuits.
- Deliver direct one‑to‑one and group recreation therapy sessions (e.g., adaptive sports, arts-based therapy, horticulture, community outings, aquatic therapy adaptations, cognitive stimulation groups) that are therapeutic, goal-directed, and culturally responsive.
- Facilitate psychoeducational and life-skills groups that teach coping strategies, stress management, socialization, leisure planning, and relapse prevention for behavioral health and dual-diagnosis populations.
- Integrate therapeutic modalities and adaptive equipment (adaptive seating, mobility aids, assistive devices, communication supports) into activity plans; train clients, families, and staff in safe use and transfer techniques.
- Collaborate daily with multidisciplinary teams—including physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, speech-language pathology, social work, and physicians—to coordinate care, set realistic functional goals, and support discharge planning and community transition.
- Document accurate, timely, and clinically defensible progress notes, treatment plans, assessments, and discharge summaries in the electronic medical record (EMR) consistent with facility policy, billing requirements, and compliance standards (HIPAA, Medicare/Medicaid).
- Use outcome measurement tools (e.g., Functional Independence Measure [FIM] when applicable, standardized leisure interest inventories, quality of life scales) to evaluate program effectiveness and individual client progress; adjust interventions based on measurable outcomes.
- Design and lead therapeutic community outings and adaptive recreational community integration activities that address social participation, community safety awareness, and independent leisure planning.
- Provide intensive recreation therapy interventions in specialty areas such as stroke/neurological rehab, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s and related dementias, pediatrics, or psychiatric/behavioral health units as client needs dictate.
- Train, supervise, and mentor recreation therapy aides, volunteers, and student interns; develop orientation materials, competency checklists, and continuing education opportunities focused on therapeutic recreation best practices.
- Conduct safety assessments and risk management for all activities; implement universal precautions, environmental modifications, and emergency procedures to ensure participant safety and regulatory compliance.
- Participate actively in interdisciplinary treatment conferences, case reviews, utilization review, and family meetings to advocate for recreation therapy interventions and to ensure continuity of care and goal alignment.
- Tailor therapeutic activities to meet the needs of diverse populations, demonstrating cultural competence and sensitivity to age, language, cognitive ability, socio-economic background, and religious/spiritual preferences.
- Lead program development initiatives that expand therapeutic recreation services, including adaptive sports leagues, memory cafés, wellness workshops, vocational/leisure readiness programs, and specialized therapeutic groups.
- Manage caseloads by prioritizing clients according to acuity and reimbursement criteria, scheduling treatment sessions, and balancing group versus individual therapy to maximize therapeutic impact and billing efficiency.
- Participate in patient and family education, teaching caregivers strategies to promote functional leisure at home, adapt activities for safety and engagement, and create home programs that support maintenance of gains.
- Monitor and maintain therapeutic recreation inventories, adaptive equipment, supplies, and activity spaces; collaborate with facilities/biomed for repair, procurement, and budget requests.
- Support clinician-led research, quality improvement projects, and evidence-based practice initiatives to advance recreation therapy outcomes and inform programmatic changes.
- Ensure regulatory readiness by contributing to accreditation surveys (e.g., CARF, The Joint Commission) and internal audits; maintain credentialing and continuing education records for the therapeutic recreation team.
- Provide crisis intervention and behavioral support interventions as needed; document incidents and collaborate with the team to develop positive behavior support plans.
- Advocate for patients’ rights to meaningful leisure and community participation, working with payers, community agencies, and support services to remove participation barriers.
- Develop partnerships with community organizations (parks and recreation, adaptive sports clubs, senior centers, schools) to create sustainable pathways for client reintegration and long-term leisure engagement.
- Prepare programmatic reports, utilization metrics, and outcome summaries for leadership; recommend resource allocation, staffing models, and program expansion based on data-driven insights.
Secondary Functions
- Contribute to program evaluation, grant writing, and fundraising efforts to expand therapeutic recreation services and secure community resources.
- Support departmental scheduling logistics, resource coordination, and calendar management for group programming and community outings.
- Participate in staff recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding processes for activity staff and therapeutic recreation hires.
- Stay current with professional trends, continuing education, and CTRS credential renewal; share new practices via in-service trainings and team presentations.
- Assist with marketing and community outreach to raise awareness of therapeutic recreation programs and referral pathways.
- Help develop departmental policies, procedures, and training materials focused on safety, infection control, and activity-specific protocols.
