Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Interpret blueprints, sketches, and work orders to understand project scope, tile layout, and installation requirements.
Meticulously prepare surfaces for tiling by removing old materials, cleaning, and leveling floors and walls to create a suitable, stable substrate.
Accurately measure and mark surfaces to determine the optimal layout and starting points, ensuring a balanced and symmetrical appearance.
Apply waterproofing and crack-isolation membranes to wet areas like showers, bathrooms, and backsplashes to prevent water damage and structural issues.
Expertly cut, shape, and finish tiles of various materials, including ceramic, porcelain, glass, and natural stone, using wet saws, snap cutters, and grinders to achieve precise fits around obstacles and intricate designs.
Mix mortar, thin-set, and other adhesives to the correct consistency according to manufacturer specifications and environmental conditions.
Evenly spread adhesives onto the substrate using trowels with the appropriate notch size to ensure proper bonding and coverage.
Carefully set tiles in place, using levels, lasers, and straightedges to ensure they are perfectly aligned, level, and evenly spaced.
Create intricate patterns, custom mosaics, and decorative borders by precisely cutting and arranging tiles according to design plans.
Install tile on a variety of surfaces, including floors, walls, ceilings, countertops, patios, and building exteriors.
Skillfully apply grout into the joints between tiles using a grout float, ensuring complete coverage and a smooth, professional finish.
Remove excess grout from the tile surface using sponges and water, taking care not to pull grout out of the joints, and polishing the surface once dry.
Apply sealants and caulk to joints and corners where tile meets other surfaces (e.g., bathtubs, cabinets) to create a watertight seal.
Remove and replace old, broken, or damaged tiles during renovation and repair projects, matching the existing tile and grout as closely as possible.
Ensure all installations adhere to or exceed industry standards, local building codes, and manufacturer guidelines for materials used.
Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and procedures on the job site, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), to maintain a safe working environment.
Troubleshoot and resolve on-site installation issues, such as uneven substrates, challenging layouts, or material inconsistencies.
Calculate material requirements for projects, including tile, adhesive, grout, and underlayment, to minimize waste and ensure sufficient supply.
Install tile trim pieces, including bullnose, quarter-round, and metal edging, to create clean, finished edges.
Perform final clean-up of the work area, removing all debris, tools, and materials, leaving the space ready for the client or next trade.
Conduct a final walkthrough with the client or project manager to ensure complete satisfaction with the finished work.

Secondary Functions

Effectively communicate with clients, project managers, and other tradespeople to ensure project alignment and address any on-site challenges.
Maintain an accurate inventory of materials, tools, and equipment, and place orders for supplies as needed to prevent project delays.
