Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Execute front-of-house (FOH) or monitor (MON) mixes with artistic precision, ensuring a clear, powerful, and emotionally resonant audio experience for the audience or performers.
- Design, deploy, and meticulously tune the PA system daily, using system measurement software (like Smaart, REW) to adapt to the unique acoustical challenges of each venue.
- Manage and operate high-end digital mixing consoles (e.g., DiGiCo, Avid, Yamaha, Midas), building and refining show files throughout the tour.
- Oversee the entire audio signal chain, from the microphones on stage to the speakers pointed at the audience, ensuring optimal gain structure and signal integrity.
- Conduct thorough soundchecks with the artists, dialing in individual monitor mixes and FOH snapshots to meet creative and technical requirements.
- Manage all wireless systems, including microphones and in-ear monitors (IEMs), by performing RF spectrum analysis and frequency coordination to prevent interference.
- Collaborate directly with the Production Manager and Tour Manager on all audio-related logistics, including advancing show details with venues.
- Specify and manage the audio equipment package for the tour, ensuring it meets the rider requirements and is suitable for the scale of the production.
- Program and operate outboard gear and software plug-ins to enhance the mix, applying effects, dynamics processing, and equalization creatively.
- Act as the primary point of contact for the local venue's audio crew, professionally directing them during load-in, setup, and load-out.
- Record and archive multi-track audio from performances for virtual soundcheck, archival purposes, or potential live album releases.
- Implement and manage networked audio protocols like Dante, MADI, and AVB, ensuring reliable communication between all audio components.
Secondary Functions
- Perform routine maintenance, field repairs, and systematic troubleshooting of all touring audio equipment to minimize downtime.
- Assist with the load-in and load-out of all production equipment, contributing to the overall efficiency of the stage crew.
- Manage the inventory of audio consumables, such as batteries, gaffer tape, and spare parts, ensuring the tour is always well-stocked.
- Drive the audio department's vehicle (van, small truck) as needed, adhering to all transport regulations and schedules.
