Key Responsibilities and Required Skills for a Tower Inspector
💰 $55,000 - $95,000 Annually
🎯 Role Definition
A Tower Inspector is a specialized field professional responsible for climbing and thoroughly examining telecommunications structures to assess their condition, safety, and compliance with industry standards. This role is critical for ensuring the longevity of wireless infrastructure and the safety of all personnel who work on or near these towers. You will act as our eyes and ears in the field, identifying potential issues before they become major problems, documenting site conditions with precision, and ensuring that all construction and modification work meets rigorous quality and engineering specifications. Successful inspectors are self-motivated, physically capable, and possess an expert-level attention to detail.

Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform comprehensive structural inspections on various telecommunication towers (monopole, self-support, guyed) to ensure structural integrity and compliance with TIA/EIA-222 standards.
- Climb and work at heights of up to 500 feet, often in diverse weather conditions, while strictly adhering to 100% tie-off safety protocols at all times.
- Conduct detailed visual, photographic, and physical inspections of all tower components, including foundations, welds, bolts, guy wires, anchors, and climbing facilities.
- Meticulously document all findings by creating detailed inspection reports, complete with high-resolution photographs, precise measurements, and clear descriptions of any identified deficiencies or maintenance requirements.
- Perform precise mapping of tower structures, appurtenances, and antenna mounts to create an accurate as-built record of the current site configuration for engineering analysis.
- Utilize and maintain specialized testing equipment, including digital cameras with zoom lenses, GPS units, laser distance meters, transit levels, and calibrated bolt torque wrenches to gather accurate field data.
- Identify, document, and immediately report any critical safety hazards or non-compliance issues related to OSHA, ANSI, NATE, and specific customer standards.
- Conduct post-construction quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) audits to verify that work performed by contractors meets design specifications, engineering drawings, and quality benchmarks.
- Assess the condition of all installed carrier equipment, including antennas, remote radio units (RRUs), transmission lines, and associated mounting hardware.
- Generate and submit comprehensive closeout packages, including final reports, annotated photo logs, and any other required deliverables to project managers and clients within strict deadlines.
- Perform pre-modification and post-modification inspections to ensure structural upgrades are completed according to engineered plans and industry best practices.
- Conduct grounding and bonding system audits to ensure the tower's lightning protection system is functional, complete, and compliant with relevant standards.
- Review construction drawings, structural analyses, and other technical documents to thoroughly prepare for inspections and understand the required scope of work.
- Perform radio frequency (RF) hazard surveys using an RF meter, document readings, and ensure proper safety signage and mitigation measures are in place.
- Execute plumb and tension audits on guyed towers to verify guy wires are within specified tolerances as per the manufacturer or structural analysis.
Secondary Functions
- Support project management and engineering teams by providing timely and accurate field data to assist with structural analysis and modification designs.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the organization's inspection procedures, safety protocols, and reporting templates.
- Maintain all company-issued personal protective equipment (PPE), climbing gear, and testing tools in excellent condition through regular documented inspections.
- Interface professionally with clients, site owners, and construction crews on-site to communicate findings, coordinate site access, and resolve minor issues.
- Manage personal travel schedules, vehicle maintenance, and logistics effectively to cover assigned sites within a large geographic region efficiently.
- Stay current with evolving industry standards (e.g., TIA-222-H), new wireless technologies (e.g., 5G), and updated safety regulations.
Required Skills & Competencies
