Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Analyze syndicated scanner and panel data (e.g., Nielsen, IRI, SPINS) to identify key market trends, competitive activities, and opportunities for brand growth.
  • Conduct comprehensive post-promotional analysis to evaluate the effectiveness, ROI, and overall halo/cannibalization impact of trade marketing events and campaigns.
  • Develop, manage, and maintain complex trackers for trade spend, ensuring all promotional activities align with approved budgets and financial guardrails.
  • Collaborate closely with the field Sales team to plan and execute the annual trade promotional calendar, ensuring alignment with brand objectives and key retailer timelines.
  • Provide robust analytical support for customer business reviews and retailer meetings, translating complex data into compelling narratives and actionable recommendations.
  • Manage and serve as a subject matter expert for the trade promotion management (TPM) system, ensuring data accuracy for planning, forecasting, and financial settlement.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as baseline sales, incremental lift, promotional volume, and market share, delivering regular insights to key stakeholders.
  • Assist in the strategic development of optimal pricing and promotional guardrails for new product launches and the existing product portfolio.
  • Create and distribute regular performance dashboards and business intelligence reports to the marketing, sales, and executive leadership teams.
  • Partner with the Category Management team to develop data-driven shelving, assortment, and merchandising recommendations for key retail partners.
  • Critically evaluate trade promotion funding requests from the sales team, assessing each proposal for its strategic fit and potential financial return.
  • Perform deep-dive analyses on specific channels, customers, or product categories to uncover underlying performance drivers, risks, or untapped opportunities.
  • Support the annual business planning process by providing data-driven inputs and forecasts for volume, net sales, and trade spend.
  • Translate overarching brand strategies and marketing objectives into tangible in-store activation plans and effective promotional tactics.
  • Analyze customer-level profitability and the efficiency of promotional spending to guide future investment decisions and negotiation strategies.
  • Maintain a comprehensive and current understanding of the retail landscape, including evolving shopper behaviors, retailer strategies, and competitive promotional tactics.
  • Identify gaps in current data sources and reporting capabilities, and proactively recommend solutions, new tools, or innovative analytical approaches.
  • Work cross-functionally with Supply Chain and Demand Planning teams to ensure promotional forecasts are accurate, timely, and support adequate inventory levels.
  • Develop and standardize templates, tools, and best-practice methodologies to streamline the trade promotion planning, evaluation, and reporting processes across the organization.
  • Present analytical findings and strategic recommendations with confidence and clarity to diverse audiences, from field sales representatives to senior management.
  • Reconcile promotional accruals and actual spending with the Finance department on a monthly and quarterly basis to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Monitor competitive pricing actions and promotional strategies in the market, providing the commercial team with timely insights and potential counter-strategy recommendations.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis from various business units.
  • Contribute to the organization's broader data strategy and roadmap by identifying analytical needs.
  • Collaborate with IT and business units to translate data needs into clear engineering or reporting requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies if working within an agile data & analytics team structure.
  • Assist in the development of sales training materials focused on new products, promotional strategies, and selling with data.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including complex formulas, pivot tables, data modeling, and what-if analysis.
  • Expertise in analyzing and interpreting syndicated data from sources like Nielsen, IRI, or SPINS.
  • Hands-on experience with a Trade Promotion Management (TPM) or Trade Promotion Optimization (TPO) software platform.
  • Strong proficiency with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Looker to build insightful dashboards.
  • A solid understanding of key financial metrics, including ROI, margin analysis, and customer P&Ls.
  • Experience navigating and extracting data from retailer-specific portals (e.g., Walmart's Retail Link, Kroger's Market6, Target's POL).
  • Ability to build and interpret statistical models for forecasting, pricing, and promotional lift.
  • Familiarity with database querying using SQL is a significant advantage.
  • In-depth knowledge of the CPG/FMCG industry, its key players, and the typical go-to-market process.
  • Competency in creating clear, concise, and compelling presentations using PowerPoint or Google Slides.
