Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Analyze, assess, and underwrite new and renewal business opportunities by thoroughly evaluating client financial health, industry sector risks, and prevailing macroeconomic factors.
  • Develop and actively maintain a strong, productive network of relationships with brokers, agents, and clients to generate a consistent pipeline of quality business submissions and ensure high retention rates.
  • Negotiate policy terms, conditions, pricing structures, and collateral requirements directly with brokers and clients to structure profitable, sustainable, and commercially viable deals.
  • Exercise underwriting authority within a designated, significant limit, and prepare comprehensive, well-reasoned reports and recommendations for senior management on risks that exceed that authority.
  • Actively manage and meticulously monitor an assigned portfolio of accounts, tracking aggregate exposure, monitoring credit quality changes, and taking proactive measures to mitigate potential losses or adverse trends.
  • Conduct in-depth due diligence on potential and existing insureds, which includes detailed financial statement analysis (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow), review of business plans, and qualitative assessment of management capabilities.
  • Make decisive, real-time underwriting decisions on a high volume of transactions, often within tight deadlines, balancing commercial opportunity with prudent risk management.
  • Structure complex or non-standard transactions, including participating in syndicated deals or creating multi-product solutions, to meet the unique and evolving needs of large corporate clients.
  • Perform regular, in-depth portfolio reviews to identify risk concentrations, performance trends, and strategic opportunities for profitable growth or corrective action.
  • Provide exceptional, responsive service to broker partners by delivering clear, well-articulated underwriting decisions and acting as a trusted technical advisor.
  • Manage the entire renewal negotiation process to ensure high levels of client retention while maintaining or improving the risk-adjusted return of each policy through pricing or structural adjustments.
  • Evaluate, approve, and where necessary, draft specific policy wording, endorsements, and other contractual documents to ensure they accurately reflect the agreed-upon terms and protect the company's interests.
  • Stay rigorously informed of market developments, competitor strategies, and emerging risks within designated industry sectors or geographical regions to inform underwriting strategy.
  • Travel as required to meet with key brokers, clients, and industry contacts to strengthen commercial relationships and gather firsthand market intelligence.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate effectively with internal teams, including Risk, Claims, Legal, and Operations, to ensure a holistic and cohesive approach to risk management and client service.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement and refinement of underwriting guidelines, risk appetite frameworks, and proprietary pricing models based on market feedback and portfolio performance.
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and technical guidance to junior underwriters, underwriting assistants, or analysts, actively assisting in their professional development.
  • Ensure all underwriting activities, decisions, and communications are documented accurately and contemporaneously within the company's core systems and platforms.
  • Uphold all internal and external compliance, regulatory, and internal policy standards throughout the entire underwriting lifecycle.
  • Participate actively in strategic business planning and forecasting processes by providing data-driven insights on market conditions, pipeline development, and portfolio projections.
  • Work closely with the claims department on specific accounts to understand loss drivers and apply critical lessons learned to future underwriting decisions and strategy.
  • Prepare and deliver compelling presentations to internal stakeholders and external partners on portfolio performance, market trends, and specific large or complex underwriting cases.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3 - 10 years of progressive experience in underwriting, credit analysis, or a closely related field.

Preferred: Demonstrable experience working directly in a Trading Underwriter capacity or in a highly transactional underwriting role within a specific, relevant product line such as Trade Credit or Surety is strongly preferred. Experience managing a dedicated broker portfolio is a significant asset.
