Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Proactively patrol assigned roadways, highways, and community zones to monitor traffic conditions, identify hazardous situations, and maintain a visible presence to deter traffic law violations.
Identify and stop vehicles for observed violations of state and local traffic codes, ordinances, and regulations, handling each interaction professionally and respectfully.
Issue verbal warnings, written warnings, and uniform traffic citations for infractions, moving violations, and criminal traffic offenses in accordance with departmental policy.
Respond promptly and safely to motor vehicle collision scenes, securing the area to prevent further incidents and rendering immediate first aid or CPR to injured parties pending the arrival of emergency medical services.
Conduct thorough on-scene traffic accident investigations, which includes interviewing drivers and witnesses, collecting physical evidence, taking precise measurements, and photographing the scene.
Prepare highly detailed, accurate, and impartial accident reports, diagrams, and supporting documentation for use by insurance companies, legal counsel, and for court proceedings.
Direct and control the flow of traffic at accident scenes, during periods of heavy congestion, at malfunctioning traffic signals, or around roadway hazards, using hand signals, flares, and other traffic control devices.
Investigate and take enforcement action on driving under the influence (DUI/DWI) offenses, including administering standardized field sobriety tests (SFSTs) and operating evidential breath testing instruments.
Effect custodial arrests for serious traffic crimes, such as DUI, reckless driving, or leaving the scene of an accident, ensuring the safe transport and processing of arrestees.
Testify clearly and credibly in traffic court, administrative hearings, and criminal proceedings regarding traffic citations issued and accident investigations conducted.
Operate and maintain proficiency with in-car technology, including mobile data computers, electronic citation systems, police radios, and video recording equipment.
Utilize, calibrate, and maintain speed detection equipment, such as RADAR and LIDAR, in strict accordance with legal and operational standards.
Enforce parking regulations within the jurisdiction, addressing issues like fire lane violations, blocked hydrants, and abandoned vehicles to ensure public access and safety.
Provide assistance to stranded motorists, including changing tires, providing fuel, or arranging for towing services to clear roadway obstructions and help citizens in need.
Inspect commercial motor vehicles for compliance with weight restrictions, equipment safety standards, and driver qualifications.
Respond as a backup unit to other non-traffic-related calls for service, supporting fellow officers in a variety of public safety situations.
