Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive scheduled and preventative maintenance on a diverse fleet of rail vehicles, including locomotives, passenger cars, and freight cars, strictly following manufacturer guidelines and federal regulatory standards.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and expertly repair complex failures in mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems using advanced diagnostic software, multimeters, and pressure gauges.
  • Conduct detailed daily running inspections and pre-departure checks on trains to ensure all systems are operating safely, efficiently, and are compliant with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
  • Execute major and minor repairs on locomotive diesel engines, including fuel, cooling, and lubrication systems, to maintain optimal performance and reliability.
  • Inspect, service, and repair railcar truck assemblies, including wheelsets, bearings, springs, and braking components, to ensure safe and smooth operation.
    Troub-leshoot and repair intricate AC and DC electrical systems, encompassing propulsion and traction motor controls, auxiliary power inverters, and communication networks.
  • Assemble and disassemble large mechanical and electrical components, such as traction motors, generators, and air compressors, for overhaul or replacement.
  • Utilize and interpret complex technical documents, including electrical schematics, mechanical blueprints, pneumatic diagrams, and maintenance manuals, to guide troubleshooting and repair activities.
  • Perform skilled welding, cutting, and fabrication on railcar bodies and underframes to repair structural damage, in compliance with industry welding codes.
  • Maintain, test, and repair locomotive and railcar air brake systems, ensuring they meet stringent 26-L and single-car test requirements for safety.
  • Respond to in-service failures and perform emergency repairs in the field to minimize service disruptions and restore equipment to operational status.
  • Meticulously document all maintenance activities, parts usage, and defect resolutions in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to ensure an accurate and auditable history of each asset.
  • Operate heavy machinery such as overhead cranes, forklifts, and railcar movers to safely position equipment and components for maintenance.
  • Maintain and repair passenger comfort systems, including HVAC, lighting, doors, and onboard restroom facilities, to ensure a high-quality customer experience.
  • Install, test, and commission new or modified components and systems, including software updates and hardware retrofits, as directed by engineering change orders.
  • Manage the inventory of spare parts, tools, and materials, submitting requisitions as needed to prevent work stoppages due to lack of supplies.
  • Uphold a strong safety culture by strictly adhering to all company safety policies, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Assist in conducting root cause analysis for recurring equipment failures to identify underlying issues and recommend corrective actions or process improvements.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to apprentice technicians, sharing knowledge of systems, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Calibrate and maintain specialized tools and test equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability in all diagnostic and repair functions.
  • Perform modifications to rail vehicles in accordance with engineering specifications and service bulletins to improve performance, safety, or reliability.
  • Ensure the work environment and shop area are kept clean, organized, and free of hazards, contributing to an efficient and safe workplace.

Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex electrical schematics, mechanical blueprints, and pneumatic diagrams.
  • Expertise in troubleshooting and repairing AC/DC electrical systems, including high and low voltage circuits.
  • Strong diagnostic skills using electronic test equipment such as multimeters, megohmmeters, and diagnostic laptops.
  • In-depth knowledge of diesel engine mechanics, including fuel, exhaust, and cooling systems.
  • Comprehensive understanding of railway air brake systems (e.g., 26-L, ECP) and associated testing procedures.
  • Competency in heavy mechanical systems, including truck assemblies, couplers, and draft gears.
  • Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic system maintenance and repair.
  • Welding (SMAW/MIG/TIG) and metal fabrication skills.
  • Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for work order tracking and documentation.
  • Knowledge of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations and other relevant safety standards.
