Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist senior installation engineers in receiving, inspecting and logging incoming lift components, ensuring all parts match installation schedules and manufacturer documentation.
  • Support the mechanical assembly of lift cars, guide rails, counterweights and door operators following manufacturer procedures and engineering drawings.
  • Carry out electrical installation tasks under supervision including cable routing, control panel wiring, sensor and switch connections, and safe isolation procedures.
  • Learn to interpret lift schematics, wiring diagrams, pneumatics/hydraulics layouts and technical specifications to execute installation tasks accurately.
  • Prepare lift pits and machine rooms for installation activities by assisting with civil checks, dimension verification and ensuring compliance with site H&S requirements.
  • Assist with programming and initial configuration of lift controllers, door logic and safety circuits using manufacturer software and tools.
  • Participate in functional testing and commissioning activities: leveling checks, door timing, emergency lowering, overspeed governor tests and safety circuit verification.
  • Perform load testing and assist in witness tests, recording results for compliance with relevant standards and customer handover documentation.
  • Conduct routine fault-finding and diagnostic checks during installation phases using multimeters, loop testers, meggers and diagnostic software under guidance.
  • Maintain accurate installation records, daily site diaries, test certificates and commissioning paperwork required for statutory compliance and client sign-off.
  • Ensure safe use, calibration and storage of tools and test equipment, reporting any defects or calibration needs promptly.
  • Maintain housekeeping of work sites, remove waste packaging, secure components and ensure machine room and shaft areas are safe and accessible.
  • Liaise with site managers, clients, contractors and local authorities to coordinate lift installation activities, access, deliveries and testing windows.
  • Assist with ordering and tracking spare parts and consumables, supporting stock control and highlighting potential shortages to supervisors.
  • Support lift handover preparation by compiling O&M manuals, as-built drawings and training materials for the customer and service teams.
  • Follow company and site-specific health & safety procedures, including working at height protocols, confined space entry for pit work and safe lifting techniques.
  • Attend and actively participate in technical training, manufacturer courses and apprenticeship programs to build competency in lift systems, controls and standards.
  • Report installation progress, potential delays and technical issues to the site supervisor and escalate safety concerns immediately.
  • Help implement quality checks during installation to ensure compliance with EN81-20/50 (or local equivalents) and company quality standards.
  • Use mobile and cloud-based reporting tools to upload photographs, test results and defect lists in near real-time for the project team.
  • Assist with planned shutdowns and co-ordinate temporary services to minimize disruption to building occupiers during installations.
  • Support service teams during warranty period visits by attending site and learning diagnostic and remedial techniques on newly installed lifts.
  • Participate in post-installation reviews and root-cause analysis sessions to capture lessons learned and suggest improvements to installation processes.
  • Undertake site surveys for refurbishments and replacements, measuring shafts, pits and machine room spaces and preparing preliminary installation notes for senior engineers.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide ad-hoc technical support to the sales and project planning teams by clarifying installation constraints and equipment requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting practical on-site efficiencies, safer working methods and material handling improvements.
  • Assist in maintaining the company’s digital asset records, tagging installed equipment with serial numbers and configuration details for future service tracking.
  • Support inventory audits and help label and store spare parts in accordance with company logistics procedures.
  • Shadow senior engineers on customer calls and site meetings to develop professional client-facing and reporting skills.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Basic electrical wiring and component installation for low-voltage control systems; safe isolation and lockout-tagout procedures.
  • Mechanical assembly skills: fitting bearings, pulleys, rails, hydraulic cylinders and door mechanisms.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, layout diagrams and installation manuals.
  • Familiarity with lift control systems, door operators, brake units, governors, and basic PLC or embedded controller configuration.
  • Competence with test equipment: digital multimeters, insulation testers (meggers), loop/earth testers and basic oscilloscope usage beneficial.
  • Understanding of hydraulic lift systems and traction systems principles and common maintenance/installation practices.
  • Knowledge of statutory testing and commissioning procedures, load testing, and producing compliant test certificates.
  • Experience (or training) in using power tools, hand tools and portable access equipment safely (e.g., mobile elevating work platforms).
  • Basic IT competency: mobile apps for site reporting, Microsoft Office (Excel/Word) and PDF documentation handling.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations (EN81 series, local lift legislation, safety codes) or willingness to learn and comply.
  • Basic fault-finding and diagnostic methodology for electrical and mechanical faults on installation projects.
  • Competence in using measuring tools (tape, laser level, spirit level) and taking accurate site dimensions for kit installation.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Level 2 or 3 vocational qualification (e.g., NVQ/City & Guilds) in Electrical, Mechanical or Building Services trades, OR
  • Completion of an engineering or technical apprenticeship relevant to mechanical/electrical installation.

Preferred Education:

  • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Formal lift industry training modules or manufacturer-specific training (on-the-job apprenticeship progression).
