The Trainee Pest Control Technician supports on-site pest management operations while learning best practices in inspection, treatment, customer service and regulatory compliance. This entry-level field role trains new technicians to safely identify pests, assist in pesticide application under supervision, perform routine and seasonal services, complete service documentation, and deliver excellent customer experiences. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct supervised on-site inspections of residential and commercial properties to identify pest species, entry points, conducive conditions, and severity of infestations; document findings clearly in company software and on service reports.
  • Assist senior technicians in implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, including sanitation recommendations, exclusion work, habitat modification, monitoring, and targeted treatments that minimize pesticide use.
  • Mix, load and apply pesticides and baits under direct supervision following label directions, safety data sheets (SDS), and company protocols; ensure accurate measurement and dilution to guarantee efficacy and safety.
  • Operate and maintain spray rigs, backpack sprayers, rods, bait stations, glue boards, traps, vacuum systems, and other application tools; perform routine equipment checks and cleaning.
  • Perform rodent control services including placing and checking traps, deploying and maintaining bait stations, conducting trapping routines, and sealing small rodent entry points as instructed.
  • Assist with termite inspections and treatments, including visual inspections, wood moisture checks, and supporting soil termiticide applications or baiting systems under mentor supervision.
  • Support bed bug inspections and treatments by preparing treatment areas, moving furniture as needed, performing heat or chemical treatments under guidance, and educating clients on remediation steps.
  • Prepare accurate, timely service reports, treatment records and inspection forms; update digital records through mobile apps or CRM systems and upload photos and notes after each visit.
  • Adhere to all OSHA, state regulatory, and EPA-related requirements while using pesticides and equipment; wear required PPE and ensure SDS are accessible and followed.
  • Establish and maintain professional, courteous communication with customers—explain findings, treatment plans, safety precautions, expected outcomes, and necessary follow-up; obtain signatures and document approvals.
  • Participate in on-the-job training and certification preparation (state pesticide applicator exams, company safety trainings); maintain progress logs and demonstrate skill acquisition.
  • Respond to emergency or escalated calls as directed by supervisors, assisting with rapid-response treatments and communicating follow-up steps to customers and dispatch.
  • Prepare treatment areas (moving furniture, covering food and pets, protecting non-target surfaces) and perform post-treatment checks for cleanliness, re-entry times and customer satisfaction.
  • Install, monitor and service pest monitoring devices (insect monitors, pheromone traps, moisture sensors) and interpret data trends to support preventive programs.
  • Perform exclusion work such as sealing gaps, repairing door sweeps, and recommending structural corrections to reduce pest entry; assist with simple caulking or physical exclusion tasks under direction.
  • Maintain on-board vehicle inventory of chemicals, baits, traps, PPE, hand tools and paperwork; restock supplies and submit inventory requests to branch managers when needed.
  • Follow precise mixing, measuring and disposal protocols for pesticide wastes and rinsates; handle chemical containers and disposal in accordance with label and regulatory guidance.
  • Support sales and estimating activities by gathering site data, taking photos, measuring areas, and preparing preliminary service quotes or scopes for review by sales staff or supervisors.
  • Complete required daily, weekly and monthly paperwork including vehicle inspection logs, training acknowledgements, service route sheets, and continuing education records.
  • Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks and scheduled training sessions; report near-misses, incidents or unsafe conditions immediately to supervisors.
  • Provide basic follow-up services and warranty checks as assigned; evaluate treatment effectiveness and communicate next steps or escalate to senior technicians for complex issues.
  • Practice humane handling and removal of wildlife when applicable and permitted by company policy and local laws; coordinate with wildlife specialists or authorities when outside scope.
  • Assist in demo and clean-up tasks after treatments (removing glue boards, disposing spent traps, cleaning equipment) while ensuring traceability of materials used.

Secondary Functions

  • Shadow senior technicians to learn advanced diagnostics, baiting strategies and targeted exclusion techniques.
  • Contribute photos and notes to knowledge base articles or internal training content to support continuous learning across the team.
  • Help maintain branch storage areas, label chemical containers, and ensure SDS and license postings are current and accessible.
  • Support scheduling and routing efficiencies by notifying dispatch of delays, cancellations, or route changes in real time.
  • Assist with basic invoicing tasks and ensuring customer contact information is up to date in CRM prior to closing service calls.
  • Participate in community outreach and education programs (school visits, HOA meetings) to promote IPM and safe pest control practices.
  • Perform seasonal deep-clean or preventive baiting programs and assist in packaging and preparing specialized treatment kits.
  • Actively solicit customer feedback after service and escalate unresolved complaints to the service manager for follow-up.
  • Assist environmental compliance team with documentation requests during audits or inspections.
  • Help develop checklists and SOP refinements by providing field-level feedback on workflow challenges and safety improvements.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
