Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely and proficiently operate a multi-car light rail vehicle (LRV) along designated routes, strictly adhering to established schedules, speed limits, and traffic signals to ensure on-time performance.
- Maintain constant situational awareness of the track, surrounding environment, pedestrian activity, and vehicular traffic to anticipate and prevent potential hazards.
- Master and apply all operating rules, procedures, and safety regulations as mandated by the company, local, state, and federal (FTA) authorities.
- Operate the tram's control systems, including propulsion, braking, door controls, and communication systems, with precision and confidence in various weather and traffic conditions.
- Announce station stops, transfer points, and other important service information clearly and professionally to passengers using the public address system.
- Monitor on-board diagnostic systems and gauges during operation, identifying and reporting any mechanical issues, malfunctions, or unusual conditions immediately to Central Control.
- Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the tram, including checks of the braking system, lights, doors, safety equipment, and communication devices, documenting findings accurately.
- Ensure the safety and security of all passengers by monitoring on-board activity, enforcing transit rules and regulations, and requesting assistance from transit security or emergency services when necessary.
- Provide courteous and effective assistance to passengers, including answering questions about routes, schedules, fares, and providing aid to elderly or disabled individuals in accordance with ADA guidelines.
- Execute precise docking and alignment procedures at all station platforms to ensure safe and level boarding and alighting for all passengers, including those with mobility devices.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with the Central Control center via a two-way radio system, providing updates on location, reporting delays, incidents, or any track obstructions.
- Respond calmly and decisively to emergency situations, such as medical incidents, vehicle breakdowns, or security threats, by following established emergency protocols to ensure passenger and public safety.
- Manage passenger flow during peak hours, ensuring doors are clear before closing and that the vehicle is not overcrowded to maintain a safe operating environment.
- Prepare detailed and accurate written reports on incidents, accidents, delays, mechanical failures, or unusual occurrences encountered during a shift.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain a clean and orderly operator's cab and assist in monitoring the overall cleanliness of the passenger areas of the tram during service.
- Participate in ongoing training, safety meetings, and certification/recertification programs to stay current with operating procedures and safety standards.
- Assist in the coupling and uncoupling of tram cars in the yard or on the mainline as directed and in accordance with safety procedures.
- Operate track switches manually when required by Central Control or due to a system malfunction, ensuring correct route alignment.
- Provide feedback to supervisors and management on route timing, track conditions, and potential improvements to service or safety procedures.
- Conduct route familiarization trips as required to maintain knowledge of all lines, detours, and special operating conditions.
- Assist with public outreach and safety campaigns, occasionally demonstrating vehicle features or discussing safety with community groups or schools.
