Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely operate company commercial vehicles, such as straight trucks or tractor-trailers, to transport freight between company facilities, distribution hubs, and supplier locations according to a set schedule.
  • Execute the timely and efficient transfer of goods, ensuring all scheduled moves are completed to support production and distribution timelines without delay.
  • Perform comprehensive pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections as mandated by DOT regulations and company policy, meticulously documenting findings and reporting any safety or maintenance issues.
  • Maintain strict and unwavering adherence to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, federal/state traffic laws, and internal company safety protocols to ensure a zero-incident work environment.
  • Expertly secure all cargo using appropriate equipment such as load bars, straps, and bulkheads to prevent shifting, damage, or loss during transit.
  • Accurately complete and maintain all required documentation, including electronic logs (ELDs), bills of lading (BOL), trip reports, and fuel receipts, ensuring all records are legible and submitted promptly.
  • Skillfully maneuver trucks and trailers into and out of tight loading docks, congested yard spaces, and other challenging environments with a high degree of precision and spatial awareness.
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with dispatch, warehouse personnel, and management regarding status updates, delays, route changes, or any other operational concerns.
  • Proactively monitor vehicle performance, sounds, and gauges while in operation, reporting any mechanical problems or service needs immediately to the fleet maintenance department.
  • Verify the integrity of all loads, confirming that freight is loaded correctly, counts are accurate, and any visible damage is noted on paperwork before departure.
  • Ensure the proper and safe coupling and uncoupling of tractor-trailer combinations, performing tug tests and verifying all air and electrical connections are secure.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and general upkeep of the assigned vehicle's cab and trailer, presenting a professional and positive company image on the road and at all facilities.
  • Effectively utilize onboard technology, including GPS navigation systems and company communication devices, to optimize routes and maintain contact with the logistics team.
  • Conduct regular yard checks to assist in tracking and managing trailer inventory, ensuring equipment is available and properly positioned for loading and dispatch.
  • Adhere to specific handling instructions for specialized freight, including temperature-controlled goods or high-value materials, to maintain product integrity and security.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide support to warehouse staff with staging, loading, or unloading materials during downtime to contribute to overall team efficiency and operational goals.
  • Actively participate in all mandatory safety meetings, driver training workshops, and professional development programs to stay current on industry best practices and company policies.
  • Serve as a positive brand ambassador, representing the company professionally through safe driving habits and courteous interactions with all personnel and the public.
  • Assist in shuttling trailers within the yard ("yard hostling") to facilitate efficient loading and unloading processes for the warehouse team.
  • Perform minor, preventative vehicle maintenance tasks, such as checking and topping off fluids, verifying tire pressure, and cleaning windows and mirrors to ensure optimal vehicle function and safety.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Commercial Vehicle Operation: Proven ability to expertly operate commercial motor vehicles (e.g., straight truck, day cab tractor-trailer) in various weather and traffic conditions.
  • DOT & FMCSR Knowledge: Strong, current knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) and Department of Transportation (DOT) rules, particularly concerning hours of service (HOS).
  • ELD Proficiency: Competency in operating Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) to accurately and legally maintain records of duty status.
    -Backing and Docking: High-level skill in backing tractor-trailers into tight docks and maneuvering large vehicles in confined, busy industrial environments.
  • Cargo Securement: Thorough understanding and practical application of techniques for properly securing and distributing the weight of various types of cargo.
  • Vehicle Inspection: Meticulous and systematic approach to conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections to identify potential mechanical or safety failures.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, as required by the specific vehicle type.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate of completion from an accredited professional truck driving school.
  • Hazmat or other endorsements are a plus.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of recent, verifiable commercial driving experience.

Preferred: A clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) with no major violations in the last 3-5 years. Previous experience in a shuttle, yard jockey, or dedicated transfer role is highly advantageous.
