Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely operate commercial motor vehicles, such as tractor-trailers or straight trucks, adhering strictly to all company safety policies, traffic laws, and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the truck, trailer, and all equipment, meticulously documenting any issues and reporting maintenance needs to ensure vehicle roadworthiness.
  • Accurately maintain hours-of-service records using an Electronic Logging Device (ELD), ensuring full compliance with federal regulations to prevent fatigue and ensure safety.
  • Manage the securement of all cargo according to established standards, using straps, chains, binders, and tarps to prevent shifting, damage, or loss during transit.
  • Oversee and verify the loading and unloading of freight, confirming that goods match shipping documents and that weight is distributed legally and safely.
  • Execute timely pickup and delivery of freight on designated routes, utilizing GPS and other navigation tools to plan for traffic, weather, and construction delays.
  • Maintain constant and professional communication with dispatchers and the logistics team, providing real-time updates on location, progress, and any potential delays.
  • Handle all required shipping documentation, including bills of lading, proof of delivery receipts, and freight bills, ensuring accuracy and proper submission.
  • Provide exceptional customer service at pickup and delivery locations, acting as a professional representative of the company at all times.
  • Proactively monitor the vehicle's condition while in operation, identifying and reporting any mechanical problems or performance issues immediately.
  • Adhere to all established safety procedures and protocols, including the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at company and customer facilities.
  • Manage on-road expenses and fuel purchases according to company policy, seeking to optimize fuel efficiency and minimize operational costs.
  • Navigate diverse and challenging environments, from congested city streets and loading docks to long-haul highway stretches, in all weather conditions.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with general duties in the yard or warehouse, such as positioning trailers or supporting dock operations, during non-driving periods.
  • Actively participate in all company-mandated safety meetings, training sessions, and driver workshops to stay current on policies and best practices.
  • Serve as a mentor or "buddy" for newly hired drivers, providing guidance on company procedures, routes, and equipment.
  • Provide constructive feedback to management on routes, customer facility conditions, and operational processes to help drive continuous improvement.
  • Maintain the assigned vehicle in a clean and organized condition, both inside the cab and on the exterior, to uphold a professional company image.
  • Perform minor, emergency on-road repairs when necessary and safe to do so, such as replacing a light bulb or a wiper blade, to minimize downtime.
  • Represent the company with integrity and professionalism during DOT inspections or any interactions with law enforcement officials.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), typically Class A, with any necessary endorsements (e.g., Hazmat, Tanker).
  • In-depth knowledge of and adherence to Department of Transportation (DOT) and Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.
  • Proficiency in operating Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) and other in-cab technology like GPS and communication systems.
  • Ability to perform thorough pre-trip/post-trip vehicle inspections and identify mechanical issues.
  • Competency in proper cargo securement techniques for various types of freight.
  • A clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and a strong history of safe driving practices.
